It is very important to define policies clearly to ensure uniformity in carrying out circulation functions; this makes it clear even for new staff to undertake their circulation assignments because their is a clear definition of what, how, when, why certain decisions are made. For example; in my own experience in working in academic libraries, different categories of patrons have varying periods of time they can check out library materials. This means, clearly outlined policies will inform the patron of consequences of overstaying with a library material. On the other hand, library staff will know what to do when such materials are overdue. Clearly defined policies is thus very crucial.
