A good way to learn the basics of GD&T is to review approved prints with GD&T tolerances zones. Try to envision the minimum and maximums of a feature specified, once you have defined an understanding for your self seek guidance and correction. I've determined this to be an effective route to learn GD&T because it can give the teacher insight into your understandings so they can have a solid point to base their teachings from and correct as needed. Referring to the book is good, but it can be confusing in the beginning and lead to misinterpretation so having a good teacher is the way to go!

Communication and collaboration with everyone involved in the design and manufacturing is key. In some cases there may be two ways of using GD&T for a specific shape, but it will be in the manufacturing process that this will rely heavily on; therefore, it is best for the whole team to be on the same page and in agreement of what was the process chosen. Adapting good ASME practices that the team will have a good understanding of when interpreting the drawings, training and lessons learned will be essential. GD&T is not an easy task collaboration can help improve it overtime.

Always communicate with your quality inspector / suppliers before an order is put in. Make sure his inspection process is what you expect it to be. Any delay after the production is done is usually much more expensive and somehow time critical.
