Their is not problem with storing logs locally for x period of time. However, in order to meet retention requirements they should be shipped to another resource for your defined period of time. You also dont want to store logs too long after your defined period of time. This can be costly.
Securing logs in the cloud is essentially the same as securing logs on prem. You should start by knowing the requirements and realities. What did the BIA state were your retention requirements? Does infosec utilize a SIEM? Are additional logs required to be retained than what is forwarded to the SIEM? The cloud offers some nice tools to assist in the backup/storage of logs. But it shouldn't be considered a requirement to use them to effectively secure your log storage.
The third step is to implement log rotation and deletion policies that prevent your log storage from becoming overloaded, outdated, or inconsistent. Log rotation is the process of creating new log files and archiving or deleting old ones based on time or size criteria. Make your logs immutable. If your already logging for documentations sake, take it one step further and make it unchangeable to ensure integrity.
All of these points mentioned above are great. I would take it to the next step and add the use of hashes and/or digital signatures to ensure the integrity of log data. On top of monitoring it would help detect tampering or unauthorized changes to log entries.
