This is too important in pair programming. Always be willing to try out or listen to the other partner. 3. Always remember [that] PAIR PROGRAMMING IS NOT A COMPETITION. This is not the time to show that you are the boss. It is a collaboration and not a competition. The success of the pair programming is a collective effort.

Moreover, while it's tempting to adopt the latest technologies, it's essential to assess whether they genuinely address the project's requirements and if the team has the expertise to use them effectively. The best tools strike a balance between functionality, usability, and accessibility, streamlining the collaborative process.

The scale of a project determines the necessary tools. Using version control is essential to prevent disorganization. It's also crucial to establish clear standards for using version control in a project. using resources like live share can prevent team members from writing code that conflicts with others' contributions, which avoids unnecessary rework and frustration. Having resources and guidelines for tool usage is an added bonus.

I prefer to use VS Code Live share but honestly the tool I mostly use is slack because it's easy to copy and past small peaces of code while I'm discussing about the changes. Github also is the preferred tool to push the changes and collaborate together to follow the progress I'm having while Zoom calls we can discuss about what to do on the next steps. Use the best tools is essential to do a great work, but I prefer to keep it simple as is.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Just because the person you're paired with is a senior doesn't mean they're always correct. We often shy away from asking clarifying questions because we think "Oh what if this is a basic question and asking it makes me look like a fool". Senior engineers are very happy to help most often than not.

A unbalanced perspective between you and your partner on reaching the goal could result in significant setbacks.

It boosted both my confidence and efficiency. It's important to always be reasonable and consider the reasons behind each step taken.

Feedback should be about the action, not the person. Focus on restricting feedback to the task. Sometimes it is tempting to give personal feedback , don't ! I have seen many pairs degenerate when feedback gets a bit too personal.

Also, you can standardize the way you give feedback by implementing an initial code of conduct. For instance, feedback should be categorized into types suck as technical issues, algorithmic problems, repeated concerns and so on.

It's essential to be specific, objective, and solution-oriented, focusing on the work rather than the individual. A balance of positive reinforcement alongside areas of improvement can help in creating an encouraging environment. It's crucial to approach feedback with an open mind, separating personal feelings from professional critique. Actively listening, asking clarifying questions, and reflecting on the feedback can lead to meaningful improvements. By creating a culture where feedback is seen as a tool for growth, teams can continuously evolve, adapt, and produce higher-quality outcomes.

Accepting constructive criticism is important for personal growth. Equally important is the manner in which the criticism is delivered, to ensure it is not presented too harshly. Channeling empathy is vital in this context. This can be achieved by getting to know your partner and understanding their perspective. There are times when this may fail but you will get better at it.

Having fun and learning are often intertwined, especially in collaborative environments. When individuals enjoy what they're doing, they're more engaged, creative, and open to new ideas. This positive atmosphere not only boosts morale but also encourages a deeper connection with the task at hand. This for me is the most important one while pair programming. All participant must enjoy the process instead of being overwhelmed. We can often add fun trivia like if there is a block of code and challenge the other participant on how we can reduce the code block to may be few lines or single line of code if possible.

Pairing is an opportunity you should take advantage of. It is not often that you can get personal coaching. Be conscious of the fun aspect. Pairing is intense and can be incredibly draining. Try have fun on the way. Learn about the other person, connect with more than just the code.

While you do pair-programming if your pair says that Castle Windsor would be a good approach if you use it there but if you only imagine Castle Windsor in England it means that you need to change your pair or your pair needs to change the topic.

We should always try to have an open mind to new challenges. Pair programming gives us this opportunity to discover new ways of programming through other people's eyes. We discover through them how to think differently and how to solve problems in different and even innovative ways.

Ultimately, you both have to agree the code is the most important thing. You should always focus on the program and never the programmer. Pair programming is brainstorming over code. Never ridicule someone for introducing an idea or making a suggestion. Just like in brainstorming, any idea that may not work, can lead to an idea that is brilliant. If people are shut down, then the ideas quit flowing and the exercise loses its effectiveness.

In my opinion, pair programming really helps the new joiners in the team. They can gain insights into coding practices, design patterns, and domain knowledge specific to the project. Also, With two sets of eyes on the code, pair programming often results in higher code quality. The code is reviewed and discussed as it's written, which can lead to fewer bugs, better design decisions, and improved code readability.
