How can you ensure that all team members feel equally valued and heard during innovation discussions?

Genius blooms in the space of being deeply heard. Too often we let our "response-prep" brain run in the background vs. simply receiving what's being shared. The smallest cue of impatience or dismissal can be devastatingly chilling.

Active listening is something that is built overtime. You need to understand the importance of listening over speaking. As a team leader or team member it goes both ways to know why active listening is important. When you listen to someone actively and respond it gives them a feeling of inclusiveness and respect that their thoughts are being listened too. Same goes for a top to bottom thoughts sharing when team members listen actively to their leader so it gives an impression of respect and value that members are listening to their leaders and they support the person.

To make sure everyone in your team feels important and listened to when talking about new ideas, you should let each person share their thoughts. Listen carefully to what they say and show that you think it's valuable. Respect that everyone has different ideas and experiences. Give everyone a fair chance to join the conversation and make decisions. Say thank you and recognize everyone's ideas, no matter how big or small, to show they all matter. By doing these things, you can make sure everyone in your team feels special and heard when discussing new ideas.

Each individual must get an opportunity to share their input with answers to three questions (1) what do they think, know or understand (2) what do they feel or value (3) what is the action they want done. By asking questions to each persons multiple intelligences this will allow them to truly feel seen and heard in the discussion.

"Leaders speak last" and "think-write-share" are two of my favorite principles when it comes to creating equal opportunity. Letting leaders speak last dampens the effects of the power differential and the priming effect of whatever a leader says. Inviting people to think and write down their ideas before sharing them prevents group think and makes for more equal opportunity in idea generation!

Giving an opportunity to everyone irrespective of whether someone has an idea or not or someone's idea is more provoking than other is the key I believe. People who get a chance to speak out even if they have a lame idea feels that the team considers them as a member and even listens to them even if they don't have something valuable to give at a time. Only focusing on the brightest mind is not what I follow. Becuase as a practice I give time an opportunity to everyone in my team. "Equity" is the term I will use.

It's important to move beyond simple acknowledgement during idea validation. While positive reinforcement is crucial, always try to delve deeper to understand the "why" behind suggestions. Ask clarifying questions like "Can you elaborate on how this might work?" This demonstrates genuine interest, sparks further discussion, and helps refine the idea collaboratively. Remember, even seemingly outlandish ideas can spark unexpected connections or lead to more practical solutions. Encourage respectful debate and build upon each other's thoughts to promotes a truly collaborative innovation process.

It generally happens that in a group their are people with diverse perspectives. Members from different states, departments, countries today work together in this remote working or diverse corporate culture so it is very obvious for different pov. It is very much needed from the team members to know the diversity a persons belongs to, a bit of their culture and the thought process. Understanding these always helps to know the boundaries one has and how to break any deadlock to get perspective of other person and make them feel valued and part of the team.

An additional strategy could be the implementation of a "round robin" technique, where each team member is given equal time to voice their ideas and feedback. This not only ensures that everyone is heard but also reinforces the value of each perspective, fostering a more inclusive atmosphere.
