Offices are required to give you a copy of your information, but not required to share with others. - The law (HIPPA) gives you one free copy, but it is usually used as an excuse to not share. - Faxing is the normal transfer mechanism, not electrons. This means every individual needs their own paper comprehensive record. I use a Word document that I update after each medical visit and am then able to ensure I can provide information for all key stakeholders. Sad, but true.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has a great system to allow veterans to share their records with outside the system providers. Unfortunately within the VA medical system, one entity or clinic does not know what the other does. A severe breakdown in communication and fiefdom that can add to the breakdown of information patients wish to share with others. They have financial resources at their beck and call but choose to act as individual entities muddying the waters of communication. So, even if your records are available to whomever you choose, a fractured system cannot afford patients the highest advantage of shared records.
