How can you ensure accurate cash flow projections for Series A funding?

Accurately projecting cash flow for Series A funding is challenging. This stage typically aligns with reaching KPIs that facilitate further fundraising, such as scalability, margins, and market penetration, or achieving self-sufficiency through positive cash flow. In B2B scenarios, deals take longer to close than expected. For B2C, CACs rise, and conversion rates disappoint. Therefore, include a contingency buffer in your financial models to account for potential deviations from the plan. Failing to meet these metrics can make raising funds difficult. Relying on bridge funding or debt financing in the absence of capital can be prohibitively expensive, underscoring the importance of realistic not optimistic cash flow forecasting.

In my experience, since it is so difficult to generate a reliable cash flow prediction for a Series A, I prefer that companies focus on the unit economics. Is there profitability at the individual unit. If the cost of the unit is $100 and you market only supports an $80 price tag, then how will you ever be profitable. I thoroughly believe that if there is profitability at the single unit, the rest can be worked out, but if there isn't, then you need to explain why you suggest losing money is justified.

Please remember that anything you put in your validation that can be checked, will be checked. So if you say: "Customer X just loves our product and will buy Y units next year" This is going to prompt the investor to ask to speak with the customer. Please rely on reliable sources; not every market research was created equal. Personally, I like relying on filings made by publicly traded companies, because their is legal responsibility for the statements made.

As an investor, I find it highly troubling when founders do not seem to really understand their projection. Often, an external advisor of CFO will have prepared the projection, and when the founder(s) then pitch, they don't fully understand what the model is suggesting. Since many investors will come to these meetings with analysts, and since any analysist have a financial background, they might ask detailed financial questions, and you need to 'feed the beast'.

Analyzing historical financial data provides insights into past performance and trends, while developing a detailed sales forecast involves assumptions about customer acquisition, deal size, and customer lifetime value. A comprehensive expense budget covering fixed and variable costs is essential, including salaries, rent, and marketing expenses. Identifying key business drivers, such as product launches and market expansions, helps make more informed assumptions for future cash flow, making your projections compelling to potential investors.
