2 Define your engagement goals and methods

The next step is to define what you want to achieve from your stakeholder engagement and how you will measure your progress and outcomes. You should align your engagement goals with your sustainability objectives and values and make them SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound). You should also choose the most appropriate methods and channels for your engagement, such as surveys, interviews, focus groups, workshops, webinars, newsletters, reports, or social media. I always recommend starting with asking the question: What outcome are we looking for? Then I map that across WIIFM (What's In It For Me) from the stakeholder perspective and the client perspective. Once we know that, we have an understanding of the middle ground, the absolutes and where a negotiation may be possible. Engagement without outcomes is a waste of everyone's time. It's just understanding what constitutes an outcome that is key... it's not always the big things that make the difference... it could just be a shift in attitude that precipitates access to your next stakeholder influencer because of a conversation of influence (you weren't even part of) in their own ecosystem.

3 Communicate clearly and consistently

The third step is to communicate clearly and consistently with your stakeholders throughout your engagement process. You should use simple and accessible language and avoid jargon and acronyms. You should also be transparent about your purpose, scope, and limitations of your engagement and explain how you will use the input and feedback from your stakeholders. You should also provide regular updates and acknowledgments and respond to any queries or concerns promptly and respectfully.

Desenvolva uma agenda regular de comunica??o e escolha os canais de comunica??o apropriados para cada tipo de informa??o e público, ajustando sempre a linguagem de acordo com cada um deles. Vale lembrar que, mesmo havendo notícias negativas, é melhor abordá-las de frente, em vez de tentar escondê-las, pois a transparência em suas comunica??es é de grande importancia e gera uma maior confian?a em seus stakeholders.

The sixth step is to report honestly and accountably on your stakeholder engagement outcomes and impacts. You should use relevant and reliable indicators and data to demonstrate how you have met your engagement goals and how you have incorporated the input and feedback from your stakeholders into your sustainability decisions and actions. You should also disclose any challenges, limitations, or failures and explain how you have addressed or learned from them. You should also seek feedback from your stakeholders on your engagement process and performance and identify areas for improvement and follow-up.

Increasingly, we bear witness to the voice of previously "silent", less obvious stakeholders with intent to discover, understand and expose previously overlooked externalities/impacts. Case in point: Nature Ireland's Citizens' Assembly on Biodiversity Loss is advocating a referendum on the rights of nature and a human right to a healthy environment. If successful Ireland would become the first EU country to recognise constitutionally that ecosystems possess legal rights in keeping with humans + corporates. The growing rights of nature movement is shifting "how we govern ourselves towards nature; how nature itself is treated under law" [US Center for Democratic + Environmental Rights]. Stakeholder + Governance: An Inseperable Duo!
