How can you encourage knowledge sharing in your team?

Things which has worked with my team: 1. Lunch and learn sessions after every project. 2. Demo sessions for anything new or exciting someone in the team has worked on. 3. Design review sessions for any data engineering design anyone in the team is workking on. In this meeting people are brutally honest as that's the main goal to find issues and highlight opportunities. 4. Go-NoGo decision meeting within team for any production deployment. This provides a platform for new folks to learn on existing processes and mechanims and the experience folks to provide inputs and learn different ways of doing the same thing. 5. Work in group or have a shadow resource work with you. 6. Go oncall or support! You learn about your bread and butter.

Motivation = Rewards divided by efforts ! The more the efforts it can be discouraging but more the rewards the efforts can be justified ! Now it always starts with setting up goals for the team and even yourself. Enforcing this in the team via Sprint ceremonies like demo, code review enforcement via settings in git are very organic way to encourage knowledge sharing. Setting clear goals like number of brown bag sessions, leading demo day etc are also clear way to set the goals that motivates the team members.

I've learned that defining clear goals and expectations is just the first step in the journey toward effective knowledge sharing. To truly make an impact, you must also cultivate a culture of trust and collaboration within your team. Foster open communication, acknowledge and reward knowledge sharing, and provide the tools and platforms necessary for seamless knowledge exchange. It's within this supportive and inclusive environment that your team's potential will truly shine, leading to remarkable outcomes that transcend expectations

In an ideal world, the team would rotate responsibilities every 6~12 months in order to induce knowledge transfer by the simple fact that it is a need in that scenario. In practice, there are often experts in some tools that, due to the lack of exposition, end up getting rusty in other ones. Trying to do a regular sync weekly or biweekly where the goal is to share advances/struggles/suggestions in some problem that is being worked on has shown to have positive effects to keep people in the loop,

A manager once told me and my team. "When you guys joined as new joiners, I never knew will you be able to perform. I gave you the benefit of doubt and look at you guys now, you have created history. I was there to take responsibility if mistakes were made. In future, when people look up to you as a leader, make sure you give them this benefit of doubt. Trust in people" I would say, Give people opportunities, let them deliver, be a leader who takes responsibility for failure and fixes things but lets his team grow with room to try new things without fear of failure. A leader is one who takes responsibility for failure on his shoulder and gives credit for success to the entire team. It's an act of giving.

An environment that motivates people to share knowledge is vital for the maturity of a high performance team, an open forum where idea exchange is valued creates synergy within the team, but to get there, a safe space needs to be created, the team needs to be aware that more they share, they naturally become thought leaders in their field, new perspectives on how to address problems are discovered, and the pressure for results are balanced with the with the whole team. Hero every single contribution so the team feel comfortable to continue to collaborate as a team!

?? In my experiences; a good habit that data team can do is moment of day to explain with audio and write in error manual and ticket how problem was solved and what possibles learning lessons to apply. ?? This habit can build a supportive environment.

By creating a safe and supportive environment, this will make your team comfortable to you and each other. They can have a mindset like scientist and never be afraid to try and make a mistake, and learn from it and try again to achieve the common goal.

Whatever tools your team chooses to collaborate and communicate, it is important that all team members understand what tools are available and how the team uses them. When everyone understands the tools and protocols, it makes it easier for everyone to benefit from the group knowledge.

Using effective tools and platforms optimizes everything. Effectiveness lessens wasted efforts. Being effective simplifies all the workload in a system.

Alongside the strategic use of tools and fostering a culture of collaboration, I've found that sometimes, stepping away from technology can be surprisingly beneficial. Encouraging the team to occasionally disconnect from digital platforms and engage in face-to-face brainstorming sessions or informal coffee chats can spark creativity in unexpected ways. These 'digital detox' moments allow us to break free from the constant flow of information and provide a fresh perspective that often leads to innovative ideas and solutions. It's a reminder that while technology is a powerful enabler, the human element remains at the heart of true innovation and collaboration

?? All documents related with data project help to understand how ideas, patterns, events or reasons affect or will affect this project. Some tool that use are: ?? Readme in project to explain basic and functional project to use and mantain. ?? Draw.io to draw diagrams. ?? Jira and confluent to share how project are evolving on time and get knowledge about comment and matter events.

Teams need to have certain set of rules and guidelines defined in the team or across the organization that how the document or knowledge sharing will be managed. For example, for a development project, it is mandatory to have a readme file in each of the projects. Once a major EPIC or development story is completed, It needs to be updated in the documents from technical and business perspectives as well. It helps the other team members to join in the future.

Positive reinforcement from leadership can be a strong motivator. But peer recognition can be even more powerful. Fostering an environment where team members are encouraged to recognize the contributions of others helps everyone feel heard and valued.

In my experience, we had a meeting to explain how we solved a particular challenge or issue and we had to document it with a reviewer to see if it was understood within the fault manual in addition to the incident ticket in jira. ??? Always get documents and keep update a failures and error manual!

Learning and sharing events can be in any form. I remember my journey with paytm. Every week we had a design discussion meeting. All new system designs were presented there and as everyone came from a different organisation and background, we had so many feedback on designs. Each feedback was thought over and then a new design was made. It was an open and healthy discussion that was an event to ensure the best designs were delivered.

Being transparent to your team encourages them to respond "openly" to you. By setting an example, communicating with them naturally will also makes them lower their defense, and you can gain their trust by doing so. Trusting your team, meaning you should have a leeway in any errors or mistakes and the team should take all of these as learning curve. As a leader, you can also show them that you are accountable to them and any of their actions, and if you gain their trust, they will be accountable to you too.

A good team lead should lead by example because it is the best practice. Showing the path is the only way to inspire co-workers to do the same. If this initiative came from management, we need to identify the few key persons to initiate the knowledge sharing.

It is important to encourage knowledge sharing in the team and one way that has helped me in my previous role was being incentivized. Another approach is that, Whenever we are developing with new tools or technologies, it should be part of the process to share the learning across the team or the organization.

Make it an expected part of a person's job - it should be in their job profile, and at performance reviews they should be asked in what ways they have contributed to knowledge sharing.
