The best solution is the one that comes form the user doer or the one who is actually meant to do that particular job which is crating the issue. it might be time-consuming with added patience will help resolve the issue and come up with a practical, fact based and sustainable solution.

Trust has to be built and cannot be brought. it comes when the team members know that the leader can be relied on and this is always a top down approach.

It is also important to create a safe and judgement free environment for all the parties involved to be able to freely express their issues, in order to reach to the depth of them (in the majority of the cases, the issues are much more deep rooted than what comes out to the surface). In a place where we have different people, conflict is bound to occur because of different ideologies. "No idea is a wrong idea, only less relevant for the current situation." This is how discussions should happen. All concerned people should refrain from undermining efforts put by others instead listening, reasoning and questioning should be put to use. Employees tend to lose motivation if they feel that they have lost; the manager should ensure that no such feeling envelops any side of the conflict. The manager has to ensure that due appreciation is given to the side that prevails in any confrontation, but the message that the project belongs to the entire team should be loud and clear.

Conflict is a difference of opinion between two individuals or groups of individuals, and they don’t listen to each other’s perspective. It is not possible to grow and evolve in this situation, so it has to be tackled positively. In my team, we sit in a room and discuss with an open mindset, list down all the pros and cons, and do mind mapping. We also have to be open to understanding the different cultural backgrounds and potential language barriers when it comes to the active listening step in the mediation process. I personally found that a lot of issues can arise from misunderstandings because of said differences. I had to mediate a dispute between two flatmates in a shared student accommodation, where the issued raised were very sensitive in nature (racism and antisemitism). They were the toughest conversations I ever had to face. I was able to keep an objective outlook and actively listen to both parties involved, making both feel comfortable enough to share deeper thoughts. It was a case of the above mentioned differences and both students wanted to still share the flat. :)

I recently read the story of U-Boat 977 by Heinz Shaeffer who was the Commander of that particular submersible during the final days of WWII, and this captivating novel gives a perfect example of managing conflict. Shaeffer managed to command the vessel for a record 63 days, deep under sea, his men not seeing the sun for all this period, not knowing what was going on around them, not able to see anything on the surface due to a broken periscope, having to deal with failing engines and always at risk of blindly running into mines. At the verge of nearly losing hope and giving up, Shaeffer objectively managed all conflicts arising and steered his men, successfully to Argentina.
