Rapport is the foundation of any counseling relationship, and it can help your clients feel more comfortable and confident in sharing their thoughts and feelings with you. You can build rapport by using active listening skills, such as reflecting, summarizing, clarifying, and empathizing with your clients. To assist individuals in identifying their objectives, it's essential to create a comfortable and safe atmosphere so that they can openly share their preferred approach. It's crucial to be honest and truthful in guiding them toward their goals. This may involve letting them know if their goals are not aligned with their plan. In such cases, it is important to work with them to develop or update the plan to help them achieve their goals. It's essential to be straightforward and not sugarcoat the path towards success.

2 Ask open-ended questions

Motivating your clients to share their career goals can be achieved by asking open-ended questions that invite them to contemplate their interests, values, skills, and motivations. Open-ended questions are those that cannot be answered with a simple yes or no, and they require your clients to provide more information. For instance, you could ask your clients questions such as: what drives them in their current or desired field? How do they measure success and satisfaction in their career? What challenges or barriers do they face or anticipate in pursuing their career goals? How do they manage stress or uncertainty in their career?
