When it comes to active listening, many people do not know how "listening" is different from simply "hearing" the sounds the other person is making. The former is an active, engaged process while the latter is merely acknowledging the other person is speaking. Most people are so focused on their own thoughts and waiting for the other person to stop speaking that they don't even realize they are not actually listening to what the other person is saying. Start by recognizing when your thoughts are not on the other person and are instead focused on something else (such as work, your upcoming vacation, or maybe your emotional reactions). When this happens, you have stopped actively listening to the other person.
