There are multiple sorting techniques with their different limitations but you can find out the best algorithm for you based on the data and the format. For example If you elements are uniformly distributed, then you can use Bucket Sort algo, or where the elements lies in between a small range of pointers.

2 How to sort data?

Data sorting can be broadly classified into two categories: comparison-based and non-comparison-based. There are many implementations of sorting algorithms, including qsort() in C library and std::sort() in C++ STL. They are quite useful when implementation is needed quickly. When speed is needed, especially when sorting large arrays, one should explore other implementation. A good benchmark is sort() implementation in R that is much faster than both C and C++ implementations. Sorting algorithms need to be tuned to the hardware. For example, for modern hardware sorting data directly by reordering values is usually much faster than indirect sorting when the original array is kept intact and only indices are exchanged. If indices are required the sorting algorithm should sort pairs (value, index) to obtain maximum speed.

Another classification of the sorting algorithm can be built based on the location of the sorted data - sorting can be internal or external. If your data does not fit in memory, you will have to use external sorting algorithms. And in this case, the choice of algorithms may be completely different. For example. Quick sort, which is efficient for in-memory sorting, will be very inefficient for external sorting. In this case, a multi-way merge sort would be more appropriate. The situation gets even worse when you come to Big Data. They will also have to be sorted someday.

The O(n) approach is very efficient, but can sometimes be misleading. If you need to sort an array of integers, you should choose quicksort instead of bubble sort because O(n*log(n)) is more efficient than Q(n^2). But if your array consists of only three numbers, bubble sort will be faster.

The first suggestion for implementing sorting is don't do it. All programming languages have library implementations of sorting algorithms. If your data can be sorted using a ready-made library implementation, use it. Implementing any algorithm from scratch can only be justified if your data cannot be handled by any standard library or if the performance of existing implementations is unsatisfactory. Or if you are creating a new sorting library with some unique features. Reinventing the wheel also may be useful in education, but not in production.
