1 Define your scope

The first step to report on your carbon footprint is to define the scope of your assessment. This means deciding which sources of emissions to include and exclude, and how to categorize them. A common approach is to follow the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, which divides emissions into three scopes: Scope 1 (direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by you), Scope 2 (indirect emissions from the generation of electricity, heat, or steam purchased and used by you) and Scope 3 (other indirect emissions from sources not owned or controlled by you, but related to your activities). Depending on your goals and stakeholders, you may choose to report on one or more scopes, such as focusing on the most significant sources of emissions, or those that can be influenced or managed.

You should establish a boundary: Define the scope and boundary of your carbon footprint assessment. Decide whether you will consider only direct emissions (Scope 1), indirect emissions from purchased energy (Scope 2), or also include indirect emissions from the value chain (Scope 3). Clearly communicate the boundaries in your report. You can conduct a carbon inventory: Collect and analyze the relevant data to calculate your organization's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This involves quantifying emissions from different sources, such as energy use.

2 Collect your data

To report on your carbon footprint, you must collect the data necessary to calculate your emissions. The final step in reporting your carbon footprint is to present your emissions data in a clear, transparent, and credible way to your intended audience. You can do this by using tables, charts, or graphs that show your emissions by scope, source, or category, and how they change over time or compare to your targets or benchmarks. Additionally, narratives, stories, or case studies can explain your methodology, assumptions, uncertainties, and actions taken to reduce your emissions and improve performance. Furthermore, you can use standards, frameworks, or labels to demonstrate compliance with best practices for carbon accounting and reporting such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), or the Carbon Trust Standard.
