The most important thing is not to jump with your offer, focus first on understanding the problem of a potential client and customize, personalize your offer. Another trick would be to share your expertise to help a potential client to solve the issue without any research, it won’t help you to make sales but it will help you to build relationship, trust and establish bond that will pay off in the long run.

It has been my experience that when stakeholders understand that the research has a positive personal impact on them and their work, then they are more likely and willing to collaborate. So I would recommend probing on the impact that the project could have on them personally by asking "Will this project's success have an impact on you personally? If yes, tell me more"

In this case your start with “what you can give to a client” vs “what I can get from the client” that differentiate you from most of the researchers and give your a competitive advantage before your start even discussing the potential project. If you have no capabilities to propose free tickets or speaking slots, think about the value you can provide at the first meeting - may be you can analyze the business of the client and share 20% of this analysis as a “hook” by email that will trigger interest to meet you in person or online.

The most successful proposals I have seen are the one that are grounded in the business background and address clearly business questions. This is a starting point - you have to be relevant. Secondly, you need to sparkle with creativity and fresh approach you apply to be different from other partners. Thirdly, it’s critical to adjust the formatting to be appealing - think what style you potential business partner will appreciate more - written email, beautiful power point, data driven articulation etc. Lastly, follow up on the offer you shared and try to understand what evokes questions and concerns to act on it quickly. Be proactive in adjusting the offer according to the client’s needs.
