Make sure that you present the vendor's strong points where it matters - if it's delivery time, scope adhesion, or ease of requirements ingestion - make sure that the client cares about those and if not - find the vendor that ticks the right boxes, not all the boxes! Less is more.

You need to customize the format to the working style of the leader for whom you are preparing the report. I have worked with leaders who are very detail oriented and others who are only focused on a high level of detail. A mismatch in the styles and you have lost your audience :)

This can be in the form of either Powerpoint slides (although please try and limit the number of slides to no more than 10-15 slides max) or a well thought-out Infographic which can summarise your story in a much more appealing manner. This will give them a chance to go over it again in their own time, and also allows them to notice information that may have been unintentionally missed previously.

I agree with all of this, storytelling provides context and the “so what?”. What does this data mean, what is the impact of this data to the business and the stakeholders department, how does the data influence current and future decision making and planning and so on.

But we do have to remember that we present the data to humans and stories are the best way to engage stakeholders across the spectrum. Narrative design of the data at hand would prove very useful not just professionally but personally as well. Storytelling helps ensuring that the intangible benefits are also accounted for and considered appropriately. Do remember, the outcome of factual data should always be connected with the story and be brought together.

Make effort to connect the data to the bigger picture of how it impacts the business goals and objectives. Highlight both strengths and challenges, and, where possible, use real-life examples to bring the data to life.

Here is a cheat sheet top item: have a story at hand that best describes the selected Vendor's performance in a similar setting while discussing their KPIs. If you can't stitch one together you don't know the Vendor's portfolio well enough to recommend them. It's like advising buying a bicycle - is it for touring or sprint racing? What's that story on how you and your mate took a similar bike on a holiday trip and it added a whole new dimension to it? Choosing a Vendor is no different.

Of course, many will want the details too. That’s the rest of the report or slide deck. But depending on the questions on those two slides, you may be able to adjust what you say on each of the following topics to focus the time you have on what matters. This is easy to say - it takes practice and skill to do.
