Not all SEO communities are the same. The Women in Tech SEO community stands out as a generous and collaborative group focused on improving SEO skills. Finding the right community matters as not all share this culture. Reddit forums and Twitter often differ. I recommend joining an open and supportive SEO community. Stick to one or two instead of trying to be in every one, as time is valuable. Your commitment will determine what you get from these communities, so choose wisely and dedicate your time wisely.

To thrive in SEO forums, I engage genuinely, offering insights and seeking knowledge. I respect the community's norms, contribute constructively, and avoid self-promotion. Time is a precious commodity. It's the one thing we can't get back. You don't want to waste your time contributing to a community unrelated to your target audience. So certainly do not enter a community being overly self-seeking and only after your own agenda. I highly recommend getting to know as many people in the community as time allows. I love to do this through sending Calendly links for virtual coffee chats or discovering other ways to connect with people.

I keep my introduction brief, as I'm not sure how many people read it. A better introduction, IMHO, is to contribute in a positive, noticeable manner. It's important to read and follow the rules. Some communities ban third-party images; others ban links; and, face it, some forums are run by strange people whose rules make no sense to you! It's OK to leave a forum if the rules frustrate your style.

As tempting as it might be, don't use AI for your comments (beyond help with grammar etc. if you find it helpful). Anyone experienced in SEO can identify these comments from a mile away. It comes across as spammy and rarely adds value to a conversation – invest your time in actually thinking about the post your commenting on and try to ask a well-intentioned question if needed.

One key consideration is people don't want to be sold to. So, obviously if you're investing a significant amount of time and effort into becoming an active contributor in a new community, you have an agenda. Just add your offer to your forum signature, pay to upgrade your signature to a graphic or something that stands out, but don't come across as promotional or on the take.

Comment & engage with other creators. You don’t necessarily have to be posting everyday to grow your reputation as an SEO. You can build your reputation by providing a different perspective off the back of someone else’s post. Creating your own content takes a lot of time, especially when you are just starting out as an SEO. Sometimes another creators post may spark a creative idea, and if it does act on it there and then - leave a comment or repost with your thoughts. It’s a win, win. So long as your comment is helpful - the creator gets more engagement and you get pushed to other user’s feeds that follow that creator!

Networking in SEO is the best way to learn and grow in the profession. Once people know you virtually and sometimes in person. they will share their knowledge freely. Sometimes, this leads to paid work, but that should not be your motivation to network. I try to go to a small number of local meetups and overseas conferences - it might be tax-deductible as an educational expense. Showing your knowledge to a large number of people builds your own standing in the profession.

Almost all SEO networking events have the opportunity to have some fun. I see small groups being formed for other shared interests, such as photography, music, travel, dancing, and so on. A couple of SEOs have branded themselves as jokers and put out a steady flow of humour. My own SEO jokes get at least one "like," so I know I am improving - why don't you give it a try?
