How can you effectively manage your career after outplacement?

Separate your *SELF* from your set of skills. I say that because most people will tell me they are “selling themselves” during a job search. Rather, to help retain your self-confidence, sell your tools (salesmanship, marketing abilities, detail-orientation, etc.) and your set of skills (outcomes) Consider this - you are a lawn mower salesperson. Your job is to make 50 cold calls every day. What happens when you call people that live in multi-story apartment buildings? They don’t need lawnmowers, so they don’t buy. Call people with 5-acres lawns, and you’ll have better luck. This helps your psychological self also - those customers turned down your lawn mower - not YOU. Keep your chin up - you’ll land again. Confidence is attractive.

After outplacement, reassess your career goals and update your resume and LinkedIn profile to reflect your current aspirations. Actively engage in networking and professional development opportunities to close any skill gaps. Consider utilizing social media to establish your professional brand and connect with potential employers in your desired field.

Take some time for yourself. It's important to allow yourself time to grieve the loss of your job. Don't try to rush into the job search right away. Take time to relax, de-stress, and spend time with loved ones. Update your resume and LinkedIn profile. Ensure your resume and LinkedIn profile are up-to-date and reflect your skills and experience. Network with people in your domain. Networking is a great way to learn about new opportunities and connect with potential employers. Start your job search. Once you're feeling ready, start your job search. There are many ways to find a new job, including online job boards, networking, and contacting recruiters.

Frustration after leaving a job has many reasons, including the realization of irretrievably lost time. We get stuck in a closed circle of negative emotion, we realize that the past cannot be changed, but we cannot open it. In order to quickly get rid of harmful thoughts about the past, as well as useless thoughts about lost time, do the following: 1. Let's analyze the reasons for dismissal, 2. Let's make an action plan taking into account our old mistakes, 3. To direct self-education in free time between jobs, 4. We are looking for a better position, because we have grown and our price has also increased. Remember that difficulties are our best teachers that help us become better.

We are in a "new" economy where rapid changes are a new norm. So don't wait till a job loss or till after outplacement to proactively start managing your career. Realize that arguably every job role can be replaced by rapid technological advancements. So prepare ahead. Regardless of your background develop transferable competencies with which you can offer in-demand value across industries. This will increase your relevance and reduce the likelihood that you could be out of work for extended periods. Should you go into an outplacement program or not, keep busy by harnessing technology to build and showcase your competencies portfolio. This will vastly increase your chances of being noticed and sort after by the right stakeholders.

I recommend that my clients update LinkedIn with the end of the month of their employment at their past company. Then, create a NEW entry, tying it back to your own profile. Put in the title of the role you would like to have. Add your key skills and search goals into the narrative section of your experience. When you do this: 1. you avoid the embarrassment of having to tell someone you were let go 3 months ago, but it still says "present" 2. you get to control the narrative about how you position your profile for search results 3. LinkedIn's algorithm will not give you an "unemployment" bias by having no current role.

Update your resume and LI profile constantly during your career (quarterly is best). You will forget things as time goes by, so do this while they are top of mind. Spend time documenting your successes, especially those that apply to the role(s) you want to pursue. Have more than a couple of people go over your resume and LI profile after you update them, and don’t take their edits personally. They are only trying to help you. Most people only spend about 6-7 seconds on their first read through, so make sure some impactful info is up front. Quantifications help a lot. These will also help build your confidence during the search process. You weren’t just doing your job - you contributed. Get your HR file to help you remember things.

Your resume is a combination of facts from your past and subjective opinions about yourself, a portrait of your personality. Facts tell about you, create an outline, and your wording, resume filling style, punctuation, writing language - your perfect face, which a stranger listens and looks at with interest. When writing a resume, avoid blunders, be honest and persistent - these two commandments are best friends. Update not only your resume, but also the mixture of your thoughts, plans and big goals - remember that an experienced HR professional not only reads the resume, but also senses your new energy.

Explore the live and virtual network around you. You're sure to find different types of people there - those who inspire you and those who seem like obstacles in your way. Remember that your environment is not your duty, but your choice. If you carefully approach business and personal, live and virtual network management, devote time and action to live and virtual communication in your professional direction, you will definitely feel and get tangible results. You reap what you sow.

Look at outplacement as the process of changing environment. This means that you will automatically have to manage your existing network and use it for the purpose of achieving your goa, as you are adapting to the new change. This most likely means that you will also have to expand your network. Meet new people, introduce yourself and notice spaces for potential opportunities.

Always video record yourself in your mock interviews. By doing that, you’ll see - and hear - any tics or “ums” or “ahs” that you can delete. Most computers and smartphones have the ability to video record things easily. Don’t prepare so much sound robotic, but also, don’t shortchange yourself in the preparation for your interviews. Most people will wing it when it comes to job search - stand out by being prepared and polished. With the stories behind the quantifications of your contributions, you will sound much more confident in your own abilities to do the job you’re going for. And confidence (not arrogance) is highly attractive in candidates.

Look at the outplacement as a routine change. We learn as we live. Now, this being a partially forceful way for you change your routine, imagine it being quite the opposite, like a self conscious decision. What would you do if you on your own decided to change your job. How would you start and In which direction would you go? As you keep asking yourself this, attend events and meet people that could help you out. Connect, talk and share experiences. It is good enough for the beginning to set your course and craft a goal inside your head, to work on moving from one place to another.

When it comes to negotiating the offer, have three numbers in mind: 1) your “walk-away” number 2) your “that’s fine” number 3) your “oh yeah!” number Remember to keep the benefits package in mind as well. A company car (or cell, laptop, home office stipend, WFH policy, etc) can be worth several thousand dollars per year. Always negotiate your pay package. Most of the time companies have ranges that this role falls into. Through your background research, you should be able to ascertain where your set of skills falls into that spectrum. Part of self-confidence is asking for what you deserve. If you are turned down on your suggestion, offer that you’ll take an extra week of vacation, or something else you value, so there are options.

Get Out Of The House I recommend finding a place to hang out where you can job hunt. Borrow an empty office. Use a private room at a restaurant. Your church may allow you to use space. There are simply too many distractions at home.
