What i have found helpfull is to use both , what i call, top down and bottom up approach. 1) Bottom up approach focus on looking at the system logs, granular interactions etc to build a view of what all other system interacts with the system in question ; this is rolled up ( by grouping IPs together) to build a view of what capabilities interact. This level of information becomes handy to open up Firewalls, define access policies and make sure that everything that interacted earlier can now integrate as well. 2) Top down approach to ensure where the high level view of interactions is built by speaking to designers, system owners and other stakeholders. This help is planning the cutover and ensuring that sufficient testing is done
