How can you effectively engage community members in environmental advocacy?

Start by inspecting your goals. Try to answer why it is important to you and if it is seasonal craving or cause worth fighting for. Patience helps, test yourself by delaying engagement, if you have the same drive 3 to 6 months after it is a good sign. Thinking about audience, everybody is good audience regardless of position and status if they are decision makers or not. Be true and honest when sharing your goals, you will be amazed by the results and unexpected allies and support.

Environmental Climate Change Advocacy (CCA). Community Engagement is the process of working collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders to address issues affecting their well-being. Sharing information, building relationships, partnerships, planning, making decisions with the goal of improving outcomes of policies and programs. Building Trust Any process involving government, project implementers, and external stakeholders requires trust to ensure successful projects and programs. Intention listening to understand ones' lived experience is vital for creating trusting relationships. Robust community engagement must be the engine of project design and implementation to reach the needy people.

It's interesting as I don't belive you should have a goal until you have engaged with community. Creating true advocacy and change within communities relies on our abilities to understand their needs in relation environmental issues. By engaging with communities and understanding the needs that exist in the local setting can you only determine your goals. Only then are your goals aligned with community and based on those goals will you see the mobilization and empowerment occur. As an organisation one must be careful to belive that we have the solutions to community problems we should rather act and an enabler for community goals and then to support the achievement of those goals.

Community engagement is always a two-way road. And trust is not merely a transaction; it's a currency built on open communication, reliability, and shared goals. The best way to achieve it is to foster open and ongoing dialogue with community members. Listen actively to their concerns, ideas, and suggestions, and incorporate their input into advocacy efforts. Create inclusive and diverse spaces and celebrate different achievements, both big and small, together. And last but not least: building trust and relationships takes time, so be patient and consistent in your engagement efforts.

I try to act and live by "treat others the way you want to be treated", but sometimes I make mistakes, apologies and make effort to change for the better in the future. I also find satisfaction in connecting community members, sometimes on purpose with a special project in mind. But recently discovered that connecting people on greater goal and allowing them to define the project brings much better results.

Speak when you think you have something to say, and when you know there is someone that will listen to you. My strategy is to shortly bring up a topic, if it sparks conversation go for it and if not change the topic. It should apply to any type of audience children or adults; PhD or undergraduates... Use every day to learn something new and perfect your skills. The more you know the better the message you deliver.

Act as the enabler within the communities. Understand the challenges they face and the type of solutions they are considering. Assist and mobilize the support needed to achieve those goals. I belive communities have solutions to the challenges they face and most of the time these solutions are unique to their needs and environment. Assisting them in realizing these goals is the role of an organization that has the communities interest at heart.

Listen to the people who have been personally impacted by the issue you are advocating on. However, if you share their story publicly as part of your advocacy campaign, make sure you go about it in a sensitive way – avoid tokenism always.

Listen actively to your community and when appropriate amplify community voices. To effectively convey the importance of environmental advocacy for community health, it's crucial to humanize issues. Elevating the voices of community members adds authenticity and invites their networks to join the cause. When people see the impact of issues on their neighbors, they're more likely to recognize their relevance to their own lives, thus motivating them to become advocates. Celebrate the voices within your community and offer concrete steps for action. Emphasize that advocacy is a journey, and the destination may not always be reached immediately. Remind individuals that their voices and efforts hold significance in the pursuit of change.

It is a long haul, and there are many ways to reach your goal. What works for me is keeping a diary. Ideas and thoughts are usually running at high speed, while in order to make an entry in my journal I have to slow down (the hand is not fast enough). After a while go back and review what was written. I'm amazed how much my past self can teach me. Seeing past in such context brings more clarity when dealing with future doubts.

Be passionate and keep the balance! Growing forests has been a passion of mine for more than 5 years now. It started as faint idea and grew over time the more I got engaged. Nowadays it is part of my family and professional activities as well as a hobby.

Savour the journey and not just the destination – changemaking is not a sprint but a marathon. Campaigns to change laws could take years to carry out, involve (political) resistance and the work doesn’t end with the passing of the law. Driving positive change will take time and require you to stay committed and positive even when you encounter challenges, so make sure you take care of your own mental health along the way.
