How can you effectively communicate problems to developers as a senior software tester?

Have this checklist 1. Is the problem repeatable? 2. Write the problem description and review as a third party 3. Provide details like which requirment(s) are tested, what is the test case inputs, what are you testing there 4. Which part of the requirement has an issue? 5. If possible , indicate if it is a requirement issue or implementation issue or documentation issue? 6. What is the criticality level of problem. ?

The most crucial factor in software development is the collaboration between the different teams/people, in this case development and QA teams. Are they two separate entities pursuing their own goals, or are they united in their aim to create reliable software? In my opinion, QA and the development team should be treated as one cohesive unit. The effectiveness of QA should be evaluated based on the overall quality of shipped software, not on the number of bugs they identify and report.

Understanding the problem thoroughly is fundamental to effectively communicating it to developers. Some techniques that I have found helpful include: - Ensuring that the problem can be replicated consistently, remembering that if it can't be reliably reproduced by a tester, it will be much harder for a developer to identify and fix. - Isolation of factors that might contribute to the issue, since understanding the specific conditions under which the problem arises can be invaluable for resolution. - Evaluation of the testing environment, to ensure that the issue isn’t caused by environmental factors such as configurations, network settings, or compatibility issues.

Before posting any defects, here are few things that needs to be considered: 1. Ensure that the issue is replicated. Clearly mention the steps where the issue occurs. If the issue is random, mention that one as well. 2. Need to be precise on the expected behavior. 3. Specify the environment where it occurs. 4. Capture logs, screenshots or record the happening. 5. Tag the right audience in the comments/defect description if the defect needs to be escalated.

Selecting appropriate tools is paramount for streamlining communication with developers. Utilizing a bug tracking system facilitates systematic problem logging and management, allowing seamless attachment of screenshots, videos, logs, or code snippets for clearer illustration. Incorporating collaboration platforms for real-time chat, file sharing, and video calls enhances communication and ensures everyone is informed of the progress and status of identified problems. These tools not only prevent duplication and confusion but also promote a cohesive and well-coordinated approach to issue resolution.

As a quality engineer, the initial step is to discern the specific scenario a bug can be consistently reproduced. Within this, the QE needs to identify the exact steps required to replicate the bug, as this information is pivotal for effective communication with developers. QEs can enhance bug reporting by using a comprehensive template, covering actual vs. expected results, steps for reproduction, the environment, and software build or release version. QEs can use open platforms such as Jira to report the bugs.These factors will be more effective to better communication between the agile team not only with the developers. The critical understanding is that a bug is not a personal mistake tucked away in any team member's pocket.

He maybe, but if you say this, you'll spoil your effectiveness. 2) As soon as you make it your job to blaming programmer, all of them will stop sharing information with you and stop inviting you to their meetings. This leaves you ineffective and makes you part of the problem. 3) Some tester go so far as to think it is their job to punish programmers for making mistakes or missing deadlines. Guess what happens to these testers? They become disposable. Some are even dropped. 4) Finally, If you see a pattern of problems that you fear isn't being address, present the evidence to the right manager and let her handle it. You've done your job.

Rather than pointing fingers or criticizing, focus on presenting facts and proposing solutions. Don't forget to recognize the hard work and accomplishments of developers, and show appreciation for their input and collaboration. By maintaining a positive and constructive approach, you can establish trust, strengthen relationships, and contribute to a more productive work atmosphere.

In my point of view While communicating be neutral and speak positive. Don't blame others for the issues Work as team and support the dev team with debugging and making your tests run in their local. Share the test cases and test data if required to improve the quality of the product

As a Senior QA, my approach is to respectfully and constructively communicate with developers, focusing on facts and solutions without blame. I acknowledge their efforts, value their feedback, and aim to foster trust and a positive work environment.

Rather than merely following up, engage in collaborative work with the developer during the bug fix process. Work together to troubleshoot the root cause, and QA can document it for the team's awareness until the developer addresses the bug. This documentation aids everyone in understanding the root cause. Once the developer is confident in the fix, both of you can perform testing on the developer's PC before sending out the bug fix build. After checking the bug fix and selecting regression cases in the local environment, if stability is confirmed, proceed to test the fix in the QA environment. This approach ensures a thorough and cooperative bug-fixing process.

I always follow up and verify that the issue is resolved. This is to make sure that the issue no longer exists and that I am one step closer in certifying that the product is good and as bug-free as possible. Furthermore, by constantly verifying and regression test the feature, this gives me a sense of confidence in knowing that I'm delivering a good product.

Followup should be important as qa already mentioned the priority of the bugs but we need to update the developer first. How crucial is that bug to resolve soon and once they resolve and update you as a QA you are also proactive to check and reply to dev

I completely agree with this. I feel like I always learn the product and code base a bit more when I continuously engage and communicate with the developers and stakeholders in the product/feature. Hi , I run a PCB (Problem Control Board ) , similar to CCB (Change Control Board), where I demonstrate the discrepancy observed in test object with help of test bench with the test procedure followed to make them understand the defect and get their approval as valid defect. Having said that , I will not debug the code. I strongly believe talking to developer will bring Project success that back and forth comments in Defect Management tool.

One of the items not listed is to build a professional relationship with developers and not just talk to them when you find an issue. I feel that people are more open to dealing with issues if you have a relationship beyond bugs.

Establish a much needed relationship of trust between the two by “listening” on each side plus understanding your test bed & requirements well enough to not only point out issues/bugs, but I also require that the QA Engineer has a possible root cause or path to a solution, if applicable. If the development team has confidence in QA expertise & vice-versa, a level of respect for each party’s input becomes process for the team & each trusts the other’s viewpoint for a true solution. Makes for a beautiful, technically sound relationship- a huge plus for the system/software being developed.

What ever the communication medium is we need to document every thing related to that issue possible like RCA root cause analysis This will help the others to understand the issue properly In communication add steps to replicate screen shot and also if possible add screen recording so that dev team can understand the issue better If required connect them over a call and explain the issue and record the session for feature process
