How can you differentiate Illustrator and Photoshop in graphic design?

Put simply, it’s vectors, illustrator. If it’s pixels, photoshop. There’s a huge depth to photoshop and a ton of videos out there. But avoid putting any images / pixel based artwork in your illustrator files as this can increase file size dramatically. Vectors in photoshop however, try to use smart objects wherever possible.

Nail on the head! Speaking as someone who started their graphic design career exclusively in Photoshop, I can't emphasize enough how valuable it is to explore different platforms and understand their strengths. I've lost count of the times I've had to deal with the aftermath of blowing up a design's image size in Photoshop, so much tweaking–talk about a hassle! On the other hand, super important to realize that not every project requires the fancy features of Illustrator either. But, as you dive deeper, you'll see that many people tend to lean toward a specific Adobe tool. It's all about figuring out what works best for the unique needs of each design.

Although the general conception is that illustrator is for vector/ easily scallable graphics and Photoshop is for raster, more detailed projects and photo editing, depending on your skillset you might achieve most of the most popular use cases with both tools. From my experience in the ads industry its a matter of personal preference - i've seen amazing, detailed work delivered in both tools. I think photoshop requires more planning in terms of your go to resolution/ output product and requires stronger hardware which with the right skillset might end with a super detailed artwork. Illustrator on the other hand gives you freedom in terms of size and you can apply any color scale on the go while designing which is a powerhouse if you do dtp

Please do not ever use photoshop because it’s “easy”. When designing for print, always use photoshop for imaging or illustrations - never ad graphics. This hamstrings the prepress function, not making it impossible to trap or add overprints or bleeds - but making it time consuming and costly. Learn what the tools are used for and use them appropriately. Look at it like this; Don’t use a pair of pliers when a wrench is needed.

I will take Photoshop as my application for the background and for the foreground I will create with Illustrator. With Illustrator I will create the texts and icons in the foreground where through images I can create the environment which will support the description with texts.

It varies with each and every project of course, but the way I have approached my more complex work is- 1) build the skeleton of the design in illustrator 2) complex color and shade work done in photoshop My car illustrations are usually 7500 px wide, 24-28”-quite large! Besides my car illustration work, I do a ton of screen print design for apparel (it’s own little world!) and every job is different, both in the design and the technical aspects of screen printing-everything from 1 color “joes garage” work to full on simulated process printing on multiple colored shirts. You HAVE TO use both apps, often going back and forth between them, to get the art just right, and to produce something that you can actually print.

The first thing to ask ourselves is the purpose or the goal of use of the graphic. A few questions to guide you could be: - Where is this going to be displayed at? Do we need it to be digitally reproduced or printed? Is it going to be scaled up very large? Is this going to be printed on different kinds of materials? Is this going to be animated? Are we using it on web?

I would make this much more simple to delineate the purpose of these two applications: If you're working on a layout of any type, an ad, a package design, a billboard, poster etc then use Illustrator. It is a much more powerful tool in manipulating text and creating scalable graphics (vector) that can be resized. Photoshop is the tool to generate the individual graphics and images that go into these layouts that require specific, photographic effects. Don't try to design layouts in Photoshop please thx.

For web graphics, like website design, in CG the Vfx part like matt painting, digital painting, etc photoshop is the first choice, and for Logo, Poster, Billboards, Brochure, etc illustrator is the first choice.

I taught myself both from YouTube channels! There a robust YouTube videos that come in handy and very good for practice on the fly.

I think for a starter designer should start with photoshop, because it simpler and handy, i think an item created on photoshop can be live trace and made editable on illustrator, and one made on illustrator can be rasterized on photoshop to achieve required result.

I'd like to scream from the rooftops stop creating packaging for print in photoshop and indesign. Artwork should be placed on dielines from Illustrator only!!!

Photoshop is an extremely deep and powerful program - having worked exclusively in it for over a decade of my print career. Young graphic artists would be well served to not take advice like “use this because it’s easy”. Use the right tool and establish yourself properly. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to take a file and rebuild it because a web designer was asked to do packaging graphics. There is a reason for specialization and there are reasons for the tools we respectively use.

Both Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop are unique from their own perspective and applications. Both are equally important.

Unlike the software itself , this answer is simple! There are two specific types of computer graphics! PERIOD! Raster or bitmap ( picture cells, aka pixels) And vector or post script ( revolution independent. ) While the area of reproductions are changing with new digital print technologies and thus changing the rules of both… it can still be said that a pixel graphic is just a digital image, for digital displays and some digital reproduction processes while a vector file is an all encompassed computer graphics file. Using auto trace to “vectorize” a bitmap image is a great cheap way to create a nonprofessional nightmare for any production art facility. Albeit slightly better than “ressing” it up ??
