There are some computations that could be done based on the application. For instance, Fresnel zones for wireless links, usage of OTDRs to detect Fresnel reflections and Rayleigh scattering, and many more. However, the best practice would be checking the components closest to the node device then working your way to the furthest. Like, checking if there are loose connections, if the signal amplifier works, etc.
