How can you develop your leadership skills as an introvert?

Working in a large tech company for years, I was surrounded by what I thought to be extroverts. It was a bit intimidating in the beginning. It wasn't until I was introduced, by my manager, a strong leader that identified as an introvert. She became my mentor and from her, I learned how to speak up, make my voice heard, and have an impact without losing who I was authentically. I also realized that not everyone that I perceived as an extrovert necessarily was one. They had just learned how to manage their presence and their energy to have an impact on others at the most important moments, while staying true to themselves.

Introverts can develop leadership skills through effective communications. 1. Self-awareness through Effective Communication: Understand your introverted nature and harness your communication strengths, like active listening and empathetic understanding. 2. Networking through Strategic Communication: Use your communication skills to create relationships and influence others within your comfort zone, making sure your interactions are purposeful and effective. 3. Continuous Learning in Communication: Invest in leadership development programs tailored for introverts, focusing on enhancing your public speaking, leadership presence, and assertiveness in communication.

If you're an introvert, one of the top leadership skills is going to come naturally to you. This skill will make your team feel empowered, capable, and valued while utilizing one of your strengths as an introvert. When you're given the option between collaborative or supervisory work, as an introvert you're more likely to choose independent work. When you bring this tendency into your leadership style, you and your team will benefit from you not inserting yourself into their work and providing autonomy for them to succeed. Just be mindful you get to know each of your team member to learn about their ideal support levels and have clear and open communication paths to stay accessible when needed.

Introverts are great listeners — and this is a great asset for developing enduring leadership. Listening is a key attribute to build cooperative conversations and understand the challenges faced by your team, community or organization. Great listeners are empathic and capable of driving consensus building, another key feature of successful leadership.

Find what matters to you. Find reason to speak up, develop and use your voice. Some of the best leaders I know are introverts because when they speak up, I know it's for good reason.

Taking an improv class is an amazing way for introverts to step out of their comfort zone. It also helps improve overall communication and presentation skills. I've been facilitating improv workshops for leaders and their teams for years, and it's pure delight to see skepticism turn into smiles, risk-taking, and play. The fun exercises not only get people laughing and building trust, but their real-world applications are transformative.

To overcome these traits you need to step out of your comfort zone. Push your self out with small steps and like speak in front of a small team or present within your team. You will gain the confidence slowly. Get feedback from others and mentorship it’s very helpful. Be patient with yourself because growth takes time. Celebrate your progress. By challenging yourself you will expand your leadership skills.

I think we need to understand introvert person well. I really doubt if people are introvert because they have fears. There is no evidence for the hypothesis that introvert people are risk aversive. Yes, they need feedback and mentoring but extrovert people equally need those things. Introvert people enjoy listening more than speaking. Their best buddy is their 'second-self' & they enjoy chatting with him. It happens internally hence we don't notice it. Introvert people receive more, process faster, think harder & longer. They love to talk when their turn comes. They have patience to wait for their turn and they happily give the joy of speaking to others. Introverts deligate talking but not their responsibility. Their insights are meaningful

An introvert's well-timed, valuable contribution to a conversation or project can eclipse the extroverts in the room. Many times introverts assimilate the ideas in a dialogue and are capable of framing the entire issue in a very concise package. This insightful and thorough packaging is one of the strongest capabilities that an introvert brings to the table.

One way to push your boundaries that may feel safer is to leverage something you know, are good at, or passionate about. For example, in high school I did not feel comfortable speaking in front of a group. I challenged myself to overcome this. I did so by taking a topic I was passionate about and then asking community groups if they wanted me to speak about it at a meeting. I was terrified at first, but I loved my topic so much that gave me the confidence to keep going. I spoke over 50 times, including on the radio. That taught me so much and built my confidence. I have now, a few decades later, presented workshop to executives around the world.

I can personally relate to the importance of energy management as an introverted leader. The constant social interactions, coupled with a demanding schedule, can quickly drain you. I've found it vital to intentionally schedule 'breathing spaces' between meetings and to engage in activities that help me recharge. It's a challenging but necessary process to set boundaries in our work, remembering we're human first. We can indeed navigate the complexities of leadership as introverts; it just requires a heightened sense of self-awareness and the courage to enforce limits.

Years ago, in my first startup, I initially believed that being constantly available and endlessly active were signs of a dedicated leader. But, this pace quickly left me feeling exhausted and disconnected from my own thoughts. One weekend, feeling particularly drained, I decided to take a complete break from my emails and work calls. I spent some quiet hours in nature. It wasn't a long vacation, just a simple weekend. To my surprise, I returned to work on Monday feeling incredibly refreshed. This experience taught me an important lesson. To lead effectively, I had to manage not just my time but also my energy. Recognizing when to engage and when to recharge became crucial to sustaining my passion and effectiveness in leadership.

Managing energy is an essential requirement for the leaders and it becomes all the more challenging for the introverted leaders. However, by incorporating certain changes in their lifestyle and work style...they are bound outshine others: 1. Stay away from people who drain your energy. 2. Prioritize your health - physical as well as mental. 3. Set SMART ( Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant & Time bound) goals. 4. Stick to time management. 5. I try to book my meetings in the afternoons where possible, because like most introverts "peopling" drains my energy levels. I do my deep focused work during the mornings when my energy levels are at a high and then my "people" stuff during the afternoons.

I am highly introverted, and one thing I've increasingly done as I started to manage and lead teams is to block out my calendar. Knowing early on how and when your energy gets depleted means learning to protect and replenish it, and that may involve - blocking out time for reflective, focused work; blocking out time for breaks if the day is packed with meetings. Only when you learn to fill your own cup can you help fill the cup of others.

In my TED talk How To Speak So That People Want To Listen, I suggested four foundations of powerful speaking with an acronym: HAIL. H is honesty: being clear and straight in what you say. A is authenticity: being yourself. If you are an introvert, you do not need to pretend to be otherwise. Many, possibly most, of the great speakers I have met are introverts (and I am too!). Remember, it's not about you, it's about the gift you are giving the audience. I is integrity: being your word. L is love: wishing people well and generously giving that gift. Stand on these foundations and practice the skill of speaking and any introvert can be captivating and inspiring - just watch Susan Cain's TED talk for proof.

The first step is to cut yourself some slack. You aren't broken. The vast majority of senior defense department leaders I have worked with are introverts--thoughtful, methodical, and laser focused. Constantly seeking the spotlight is not leadership. If you're an expert in your field who geniunely cares about your team, people will gravitate to you. I highly recommend Susan Cain's book, "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking." It is a fantastic analysis of how extraversion has been baked into the American ideal of "success," and how you can adapt to it.

There was a time when being charismatic and confident made you a good leader. While these are not bad traits, it’s more important to be trustworthy and empathetic. Build trust by communicating clearly and consistently. Have more impact by saying less. Make sure your team knows what you expect. Hold them, and yourself, accountable. Be honest. Listen to your team to learn how they feel. Make sure they know how you feel. Don’t hold back on personal experiences. Share them. Let your team know you’re not perfect, you’re human. You care about them, and they care about you. That’s what makes you a good leader.

Practicing aloud and pairing up with your opposite are my top two recommendations: 1. Practicing allows you to become fluent in the topic, and you can progress to storytelling rather than bullet-point driven content. Slides are not message, the message is the story you are telling with the aid of visuals, words, sounds, video. 2. Pair up with your opposite. If you are a serious person then seek to co-host with someone who can easily interject some fun and vice versa to balance things out. The result is really enjoyable to be a part of and to listen to/watch from the audience POV. Do practice hands offs so delivery becomes very smooth.

One of the best ways to be seen as a leader in your field in your industry or at work is to have a clear personal brand. This involves unlocking your IP, and identifying what you want to be known for and what you can share to demonstrate your expertise. When you are clear on these things you will increase your influence dramatically

Collaborating with a diverse team is critical for leadership growth. As an introverted leader, leverage the strengths of extroverted or outspoken team members to complement your tendencies. First, build authentic relationships and trust with each person, making them feel valued for their unique abilities. Understand their communication styles and motivations. When appropriate, delegate tasks that involve significant public interaction to extroverts who thrive on that. Empower them to lead presentations, workshops or town halls in their area of expertise. In meetings, create space for extroverts to ideate and brainstorm openly while you listen and analyze. Blend their expansive thinking with your focused approach.

In the early days of my career, I found myself paired with a team member whose approach was the polar opposite of mine. I often sought solitude to brainstorm and analyze, while he thrived in animated group discussions. Initially, our differences led to some friction. However, during a challenging phase of our project, I noticed something. His ability to spark ideas in group settings combined with my knack for refining them in solitude turned out to be a winning formula. It wasn't always smooth sailing, but the blend of our strengths led to solutions neither of us could have achieved alone. This experience was a profound reminder of the power of collaboration and how varying viewpoints can craft a richer and more effective outcome.

As someone who is an introvert, INTJ on the Myers-Briggs, here are some things I did to become a better leader. 1. Learn to be assertive. This doesn't mean that you have to be aggressive or pushy, but you should be able to stand up for yourself and your ideas. 2.Develop your listening skills. Good leaders are good listeners. They take the time to understand the perspectives of others and to build consensus. 3. Become a trusted advisor. People are more likely to follow a leader who they trust and respect. Be someone that people can come to for advice and support. Be honest and reliable, and keep your promises. 4 . Be a team player. Leaders don't work in isolation.

Being an introvert can be a superpower because if you don't have a need to be in the spotlight, you can encourage the people around you to get there. there is nothing wrong with delegating or passing the baton, and if you find yourself for instance having to speak in public but not comfortable, of course you can challenge yourself and do it anyway, but you can also use this as an opportunity to give the mike to someone in your team who is great at speaking publicly and help them grow their skills.

We never go very far alone, so the ability to rally your peers, motivate your team and inspire your partners in various forms of collaborations are essential to your leadership. Look for diverse backgrounds, collaborative mindsets, interactions that have trust and respect, to continue to create effective collaboration networks.

I'm not an extrovert. I find networking events to be draining and I have to schedule restorative time after conferences. But that doesn't reduce my ability to lead and relate to my team. Introvert vs. extrovert is an irrelevant framing for leadership, imho. You still do the same activities - inspire, coach, lead, etc. You just do it in a different WAY, that matches your strengths and what gives you energy. The only problem is if you try to follow some notion of how you SHOULD be leading. If you go against what works for you, you'll end up exhausted and probably not very effective.

It is easy to lose your identity by conforming to the expectations of others. The reason you are part of the team is for the skills and gifts you bring. It is important to be confident about what you bring and showing your thinking. It is crucial that you focus on the message and not be too critical of yourself. Most often, the cause of worries and anxiety is self-inflicted and invalid.

Connecting who I am with stepping out of my comfort zone really helped me. I started to share out loud where I couldn’t relate to something, or where I could based on my life experiences. As I did that I received a lot of encouragement to keep doing it, as it was comforting to my team to hear me acknowledge my discomfort or when I didn’t know enough and wanted to learn. The vulnerability connected us and still does.

Contemporary leadership theories are not built around dominant and outgoing leaders. On the contrary, they shift the focus to the team. Good leadership is not about the leader's qualities but how well the leader supports the team to reach their goals. It is high time to abandon the stereotypes – after all, they are stereotypes ?? – and take an inclusive approach to leadership as a set of skills, not personality traits or leaders’ personal characteristics. Embracing diversity and authenticity is the key!

Leadership is not about being the loudest voice in the room; it’s about inspiring and guiding others. As an introvert leader myself, I’ve learned over time to be effective by leveraging the strengths and qualities that are unique to me. Self-acceptance and embracing my introverted nature, is a constant reminder to myself that being an introvert is not a weakness but a different way of engaging with the world. Authentic leadership resonates with people, regardless of personality type. Empathy and care for the others develops trust and respect within the others. Embrace who you are, with all your strengths and weaknesses. Self-commit to continuously work to develop your leadership skills in a way that aligns with your own personality.

The qualities that make you an introvert like empathy, focus and writing are your leadership superpowers. Embrace them. Learn to leave your comfort zone occasionally to grow. But spend most time in environments where you thrive. Delegate tasks like networking that are draining. Play to your strengths instead. Focus on 1-on-1 or small group meetings to connect with and inspire others. Avoid trying to be charismatic in large gatherings which may drain you.

People are shocked when I tell them, I am introvert, given that I am a public speaker. To recharge I need to be by myself. I am not great at socializing. But here's the key: I have learnt to give. When I speak, when I inspire, when I motivate, I think of the impact I am making even in one person's life. Find something similar in you. Then all those things that take energy, feel less of energy draining and less of a chore. This is one trick that has truly worked wonders in my career. Embrace your skills. Focus of going just 1% out of your comfort zone every time. Tiny consistent steps lead to big wins. Embrace you.

Introverts are often careful listeners and that is a great foundation for leadership. To be an effective leader does not require a loud voice or all the answers. It is about hearing concerns, hearing ideas, acknowledging that others have great ideas and solutions you would not think of. The skill in leadership is bringing others forward and integrating across peoples' ideas. Great leaders take the parts and create a bigger whole. Loudness is less important than consideration. In my experience, as an introvert (INTP personality type) who has developed approaches to flex my style, one of the most effective ways is to genuinely be interested at other people: who they are, what they do, why they do and how. To help with the above, one effective technique for introverts to keep a conversation flowing is to “mirror” the other person’s talk: when having a conversation pay attention and repeat the last two or three words they said as a question. Eg if someone is telling “last month I attended an amazing training session…”, you say “amazing training session?”. Repeat that and notice how the conversation will flow naturally and effortless
