How can you develop your alliance competencies and capabilities over time?

With a decade of experience, I emphasize a holistic approach to alliance management. Assessing who, what, why, when, and how through SWOT analysis is key. Cultural fit, legal compliance, technology, scalability, and more are critical factors. A long-term vision, innovation, effective communication, feedback mechanisms, and exit strategies are vital for fostering successful alliances.

Although it might be seems like a cliche but working hard, expanding your skills and knowledge base are essential for building alliances and creating strategic partnerships be it internally within the workplace or externally between businesses. Having a good network requires showing other parties that you can add value and should be looked at as a networking opportunity with mutual benefits rather than hoping to benefit from others while not being able to offer anything in return. Be it your practical experience, network, knowledge or skills or even better a combination of all.

?? I believe that a thorough self-assessment is a foundational step for growth in alliance capabilities. ?? Gap Analysis Identify discrepancies between current competencies and desired goals. Analyze skills and resources to pinpoint areas needing development. ?? Competency Maturation Focus on evolving competencies. Gradual enhancement through training and experience is crucial for sustainable growth. ?? Inter-organizational Learning Engage in learning exchanges with alliance partners. This facilitates mutual growth and understanding, strengthening alliance bonds. ?? Feedback Integration Regularly incorporate feedback from partners and internal assessments. This ensures continuous improvement and adaptability in alliance management.

A lesson learned through my experience is that the assessment must also include readiness if the organization does not already have an alliance or strategic partnership program in place. Some organizations have a hard time shifting mentality on how to drive success and growth through an alliance, and if the leadership and culture are not ready then no amount of coaching or facilitation will get them there without more intensive intervention. I supported an organization that had me drive the assessment, then recommend a partner, then establish an alliance, then - you see where this is going. To drive positive results, an alliance requires organizational commitment and active engagement from multiple players on both sides. That's how you win!

Building a strong network within the alliance and partnership community is also crucial for sharing insights and gaining valuable perspectives.

Ongoing development of skills across multiple disciplines is key (analysis, communications, marketing, sales, program management, etc.). I also recommend setting aside time to develop some core skills around the basics tied to the alliance companies to ensure you understand their business to effectively interact and engage as needed. It's often necessary to become a SME of sorts with each one to ensure you can adapt and ensure your company and each alliance partner remain aligned in how to proceed to get the greatest value from the alliance. It's likely a team of folks in your org will need to do the same, possibly even earning certifications or co-training with alliance team members.

To improve your core skills, you need to engage in continuous learning, coaching, mentoring, and feedback. You need to constantly assess your strengths and weaknesses, as well as your opportunities and challenges in your alliance environment. You need to seek and apply feedback from your partners, peers, managers, and other stakeholders, as well as from yourself, to identify and address your gaps and areas for improvement. You need to learn from your own and others’ experiences, successes, and failures, as well as from best practices and benchmarks in the alliance field. By doing this, you will be able to improve your core skills and increase your alliance competencies and capabilities.

Throughout my career, I learned that the concept of "unique assets" is somehow simple and complicated at the same time. There are no unique assets on the market, and if you start with this simple fact, you may rethink your potential leverage in an alliance. If you are not that special, how can you be and act as one when needed? Aside from the nature of an asset, it is helpful to understand these three dimensions to truly understand an asset's usefulness or "leverageness": Difficulty to Replicate, Difficulty to Imitate, and Difficulty to Substitute. This will broaden your field of view and allow you to ease the search for synergies and complementaries.

Take "leverage the unique assets in the supply chain" as an example: utilizing the distinct strengths and resources to gain a competitive advantage in the logistics and distribution process. This involves identifying what sets the supply chain apart, whether it's proprietary technology, strategic partnerships, efficient processes, or exclusive sourcing. By recognizing these unique assets, we can optimize their use to reduce costs, improve operational efficiency, and enhance customer satisfaction. Ultimately, harnessing these advantages can help our business stand out and thrive in a highly competitive marketplace.

To leverage your unique assets, you need to align them with your partner’s needs and expectations, creating synergies and complementarities, and sharing risks and rewards. You need to understand what your partner is looking for and what you can offer to them, as well as what they can offer to you. You need to find the areas of convergence and divergence between your assets and your partner’s assets, and identify the potential benefits and challenges of combining them. You need to negotiate and agree on how to allocate and utilize your assets in the alliance, as well as how to measure and reward their contribution and performance.

While one obviously thinks of how an alliance will help their own company, always useful to think what can you contribute to the other person/company in progressing towards their own goals. Listen, be aware and position suitably which allows - contributing to the alliance while also leveraging the alliance for your own. Authenticity, delivering on promise leads to credibility and inturn sustainability. Re-assess the relevance of the alliance to your strategy and your own commitment to the alliance from time to time.

Expanding your network in business strategies can be achieved through several key approaches. First, actively engage in industry events, conferences, and trade shows to connect with like-minded professionals. Second, leverage social media platforms and professional networks like LinkedIn to connect with potential partners, clients, and industry peers. Third, consider collaborating with complementary businesses or joining industry associations to broaden your reach. Fourth, invest in mentorship and seek out advisors who can provide guidance to their networks. Lastly, always prioritize building strong and genuine relationships by providing value and support to your connections, which can lead to a more impactful network over time.

Staying up-to-date on changes requires a significant focus on monitoring and not only staying in lock-step with the knowledge but also keeping stakeholders informed and supporting the evolution of change that is needed to maintain competitive advantage, strength of alliance, strategic direction, etc. From a business strategy perspective, you need to act as intake, advisor, strategist, planner, risk manager, etc. and partner with members of the cross-functional team to evolve as change is needed. This should be operationalized as part of the setup of the alliance, and it is critical to the overall success once things are up and running. Hopefully you have multiple team members engaged to support the various change scenarios as they arise. :)

Innovation through an alliance or strategic partnership is where enduring success can occur. Look at your best practices, industries where you've done something interesting for one client that could move the whole industry forward, areas where you're positioned to create a new segment for ideas. Determine where the best opportunities are for innovation and growth. Some of the best alliances in technology have led to leaps in capability, such as partnerships between AI companies and leaders in operating systems. This is where the strategy is critical, and the upside potential is significant. If all the things above have been done well, you're well positioned to support alliance innovation.

The sixth and final step to develop your alliance competencies and capabilities is to innovate and grow. This means creating new and better ways of delivering value to your customers and stakeholders, as well as exploring new and emerging opportunities for your alliance. You can innovate and grow by fostering a culture of creativity, experimentation, and learning within your alliance. You can also use tools such as brainstorming, prototyping, and testing to generate and validate new ideas and solutions. Innovation and growth are the ultimate goals of any alliance, as they enable you to achieve and sustain competitive advantage, customer satisfaction, and stakeholder value.

Alliance and collaboration are key for success in today's competitive environment. Even we can collaborate with the competitors for growing our market. This is called #coopetition (collaboration with competitors). Let's think rationally. Only in one thing (striving for greater market share) our interests contradict with our competitors. In all remaining issues we have much to collaborate - we face the same challenges and problems in the market, we work with the same legislation, etc.
