How can you develop students' leadership skills in a virtual classroom?

Sometimes this is the hardest thing to do. What is it you want the students to do? What is the purpose of the activity? Why are we doing this project and what do you hope the students experience as a result of having gone through the project? Using rubrics and checklists have proven to be a good way for me to see when I've might have bitten off more than I could chew and when I've needed to dial it back or when I could push a little more. Pre-planning is definitely key here.

I love to use Jamboard to help me to see my ideas written out or in pictures. Polls, and surveys are also helpful. Especially with students because all things provide the students with a voice that otherwise might not be heard. Podcasts and multimedia options give additional ways in which information can be given to the students and that they can give information to you. I love that learning isn't this one-way street. There are so many different ways in which you can get information.

I've learned being in leadership, that a leader always emerges in any situation. While I love assigning roles, I always like to wait to see who emerges as the natural leader and who assigns themselves to roles in the groups before I assign roles. I find that it is helpful. In some cases, I like to give a gentle nudge if I see leaders who may need it. In some cases, I've been known to have to coach someone through some situations when they didn't know what it meant to be a leader. Leadership isn't for everyone and sometimes that's the lesson that has to be learned by being in the seat.
