From my experience, it is vitally important that the overall strategic goal has a clear, unambiguous business consensus and endorsement from the board/division sponsoring it; and it must be architected with the input of thought leaders / stakeholders around us, while we remain truly curious. We must be careful to not fall into the the trap that 'I' will set the strategy in isolation and 'I' know the answers, this inevitably leads to severely inhibited downstream traction.

This step is essential - First an environment must be created where anyone, at any level, feel that they have the right, and further are encouraged, to share feedback. We must listen to this curiously, and we must be willing to change direction should the input, status, business need etc require it. Throughout this entire process, it is important that all team members transparently understand who the decision maker is - the one who will truly listen and be curious about all inputs (and that must be demonstrated) - but also has the empowerment to make decisions.

Strategic thinking must start with the 'What?' question. 'What' is the problem, or 'what' is business priority target(s) etc. This is a crucial and foundational step in the process. All too often, in my experience, we can get caught up in the solutions before understanding the business requirement, in fact there are countless stories where the whole thought-process is flipped; 'here's an amazing solution what can we use it for?', or 'we need to adopt AI and ML!'. Now AI, ML or solution 'X' may well be the answer, but equally, they might not be, and should not part of the strategic architecture. Getting a clear consensus of the business goal and laser focussing on that should be at the start, middle and end of any strategic thought process.

Skills of strategic thinking could be improvised by looking back at how well we handled a given situation or task, was it optimal or what better could have been done, learn from others and ours mistakes and learn from successful case studies.

It's also important to note how we have dealt past situations; in Implementation did we work in accordance with what were suggested by the leaders, how we handled situations that might have not gone as expected, our troubleshooting skills and ability to act quickly.
