1 Understand the big picture

Before you can create a long-term strategy, you need to have a clear understanding of the big picture: what is the mission, vision, and values of your organization? What are the strategic objectives and priorities of your group and how do they fit into the overall goals of your company? How does your group contribute to the value proposition and competitive advantage of your organization? It all starts with a firm answer to the central "why" question of the organization. Why the organization should exist? Why the customers it has chosen to serve gain value from it? And then comes the "what" question. In the context of the answer to the "why" question, what the organization wants to achieve? The answer to the "why" question defines the strategic narrative, the purpose or the mission of the organization, whereas the answer to the "what" one defines its vision. And then comes the answer to the "how not" question, namely the value system of the organization. All the above together form the strategic core of the organization, which lies at the heart of its strategy process.

Often this starts with examining your ecosystem. Who are the major stakeholders (i.e. internal / external collaborators, customers, and competitors)? What are their expectations, needs, and relevant interactions? How does this begin to define the major opportunities and obstacles the team is facing now or around the next corner. When done well, there will be a direct line between this work and the determination of the core value or purpose of the team within the ecosystem (both internally and externally).

Often these themes drive the creation of the tactical plan but sometimes some aspects only become evident as the plan is formed. If these themes cannot succinctly summarize how the team intends to win, where it will allocate staff and other resources, and what patterns of action will be necessary by the team, it should undergo continued refinement until it does.

5 Monitor and evaluate your strategy

Finally, you need to monitor and evaluate your strategy regularly to ensure that it is working and that you are making progress towards your long-term goals. You need to measure and report on the results and impact of your actions and compare them with the expected outcomes and indicators.
