How can you develop leadership skills in your marketing team?

When a new team member starts, I like to talk with them about their career goals and vision beyond their current role. Part of my job as a leader is to prepare team members for their next step. If I know what they are interested in doing or exploring, then I can involve them in projects that help them grow while also being beneficial for the company and team. And, of course, career development and progress should be discussed regularly, not just at a single point in time.

In my experience, this needs to be kept simple, making goals to complex that nobody can believe in will never work. You then need to live it, breathe it and bring your team on the journey with you, if it’s just on a whiteboard or in a 1:1 document it won’t stand the test of time. Bring it to life, how can your team drive this forward and be successful? But there is always a balance, overkill on this can also have negative effect and teams can switch off to it. Be yourself, be passionate, lead by example and it will work.

SMART Goals give structure, however, a good stack-ranking of the team and, developing a detailed growth plan for each of them and, working with them closely has proven successful.

Listen to all the team members and understand their strengths, appreciate their ideas and help overcome their weaknesses in the job.

Its important to share your vision with others and your wider team. To get everyone on the same page take the time to onboard people in the right way, show and explain to them your business goals and vision and how they can play an important part. This will have a huge part to play when it comes to adopting your culture and have a team aligned to one goal.

I give my team an opportunity to fly. I prefer to stay beside them and always I am there if they need my support, but I never micro-manage them. Micro-managing stops the team from creating innovative ideas. When team members feel they are the owners of their project, they will be motivated to grow.

Leadership shows up differently in everyone. Know the roles and responsibilities of your leaders, but also understand their strengths, and encourage them to build on them. Not everyone will excel at communication in the same way, or at all. Empower them to communicate, but also to independently determine how that gets done authentically for them. This is how they can build on their strengths and also build the business.

Giving equal opportunities to the team to share ideas and put them into action is an excellent way to develop leadership skills while at the same time empowering them. This creates a sense of ownership and motivation to perform better.

We are all different and for that reasons its important to understand how your team work best. Take the time to understand them and tailor your guidance to their needs which supports there growth. Some may want you to be more hands whilst others may just want to sense check things with you. Understand your team and give them the right level of support and in return watch them grow.

Coach, don't dictate! Many forget that the goal of constructive feedback is to help people grow and improve rather than just point out their mistakes. Avoiding vague feedback is the best approach to achieve this! Feedback that is too generic might be confusing and ineffective. Instead, give concrete examples and actionable suggestions that that will aid in team members understanding and implementation. This clarity enables them to take ownership of their growth. As leaders, you must take the time to understand your team members' individual strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations. Tailor your coaching approach accordingly, offering guidance and support to help them reach their full potential.

It's crucial to adopt a growth mindset that acknowledges mistakes as valuable learning experiences. Encourage your team to view feedback not as criticism, but as a chance for improvement. In coaching, explore not only marketing techniques but also soft skills like emotional intelligence and resilience. Moreover, consider reverse mentoring, where junior team members provide insights to senior staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning. This approach can lead to reciprocal growth, as fresh perspectives from newer team members can inspire innovative marketing strategies. Ultimately, feedback and coaching should aim to nurture adaptable leaders who are well-rounded in both marketing acumen and personal development.

Constructive feedback is key but at the same time it needs to be digested by individuals who have a growth mindset. Everyday is a school day and we can all learn and be better so when it comes to providing feedback be constructive so one can clearly digest and overcome them with your guidance. True leaders will show the way!
