How can you develop leadership skills when collaborating in Risk Management?

The scope and objectives set in risk management leadership are like a compass, giving each team member a clear indication of the destination and path. Take, for instance, the construction of the Burj Khalifa. Clear, well-defined objectives, and understanding the project's scope were central in managing the risks that were part and parcel of such an ambitious project. By articulating these elements early in the game, leaders help build a culture of transparency and accountability, which is necessary in handling ambiguities. Feedbacking with your team for help turns what could be obstacles into stepping stones that reinstates a collective commitment towards the project's success.

Key to Risk leadership is to understand the business - its goals, values and systems. This is the core for any risk leader to support, nurture & protect.

Developing leadership skills in risk management collaboration involves clear communication, decisive decision-making, strategic thinking, fostering teamwork, resolving conflicts, staying adaptable, empowering team members, and continuous learning. Leaders in risk management must effectively communicate risks, make informed decisions, anticipate and mitigate potential issues, build a collaborative team environment, resolve conflicts, adapt to changing circumstances, empower team members, and stay updated on industry developments to effectively manage risks and lead their teams towards success.

While we may not have too much control over the changes occurring around us–be it economic technological, or financial–we do have control over our response. Cultivating the following five qualities will help a leader remain cool, collected, and moving forward, no matter how hairy things get from the outside; -Adaptability -Resilience -Strategic foresight -Vision is so valuable -Emotional intelligence Several practical strategies can help a leader develop leadership skills to navigate these turbulent waters: -Encourage a culture of adaptability and innovation. -Transparent communication is crucial to develop leadership skills. Keep your team informed about any changes and the reasons behind them. -Develop contingency plans

Risk Management is one of the very few ways to learn about leadership. This is because people generally shuns risk matters and being in this role, you need to influence people and that requires lots of persuasive and stakeholders management skills. You need to be empathetic to be able to act like servant leader to enable people to embrace risk management. Risk Management applies to all levels and hence, the ability to connect with all levels and lead by example demonstrate the attributes of a good leader. Lastly, the ability to anticipate risks, strategise accordingly definitely are leadership qualities. Having said that, how many can do the above-mentioned at all angles and expectations? Unfortunately not many. We have much to learn!

Develop leadership skills in risk management collaboration by understanding the organization's risk landscape, fostering cross-functional relationships, and communicating risks effectively. Cultivate strategic thinking, honing decision-making skills, and embracing adaptability to navigate uncertainties. Pursue leadership training, seek mentorship, and engage in continuous learning. Risk assessment should also have a “time dimension”, meaning that different risks can happen over time, or what is a risk now can become an opportunity later, or that What doesn’t seem a risk now can become a risk tomorrow. Also, very important is to consider the risk potentially occurring after a mitigation action taken to solve a specific risk: I like to calling it “the mitigation risk”

To identify and assess risks, I would: 1- Define the scope and objectives of the risk analysis 2- Identify the potential hazards and threats that could affect them 3- Evaluate the likelihood and impact of each risk and rank them accordingly Communicate the results and recommendations to the stakeholders

As leaders of effective risk management, proactive approaches must be taken to identify and evaluate any kind of threats that would result in failure on a project. Let's take, for instance, the recent pivot in the tech industry towards remote work, which brought along with it a whole new set of cybersecurity risks that many weren't prepared for. The use of tools, such as risk matrices and SWOT analysis, to the effect that a leader can systematically visualize and prioritize the existing risks becomes necessary. It is, therefore, important for leaders to cultivate an environment where team members feel empowered to share diverse perspectives, ensuring risks are not only identified but also owned and managed with clear accountability.

In any organization, despite how mature the risk management function may be, addressing all the risks at once is not feasible. Hence, this is a crucial stage for leaders to get involved intimately to ensure the right risks are prioritized - those that are most pervasive across the company, and are highly correlated to the medium and long-term strategic objectives. Leaders can also use their experience and influence across cross-functions to develop risk mitigation plans that are sustainable, inclusive, and achievable.

This is very crucial stage of risk management. As a leader you need to ensure timely implementation of risks with the support from team members. Regular review of implementation status and timely correction of mitigations is to be ensured as a leader.

In commodity trading risk management, being a leader means applying emotional intelligence to resolve conflicts within the team, especially during high-stakes negotiations. It involves translating the nuances of commodity price volatility into straightforward strategies for non-experts, for instance, explaining how oil price fluctuations impact revenue forecasts.Strategically, you’d conduct risk assessments to anticipate shifts in commodity markets or regulatory changes affecting trade.Foster innovation by encouraging the use of predictive analytics to better forecast commodity prices.Make swift, informed decisions on trading strategies when faced with sudden market changes, demonstrating leadership that guides the team through uncertainty

The planning and implementation of responses to risks form a pivotal aspect of our risk management approach. Leading this process involves orchestrating the development and execution of comprehensive strategies aligned with the outcomes of risk assessment and prioritization. I ensure that the risk response plan is meticulously coordinated, with a focus on preventing, reducing, transferring, or accepting risks in accordance with our compliance objectives. As a leader, I actively support the implementation phase, guaranteeing the availability and adequacy of resources, time, and budget.

Effective risk management leadership is not a mere process adherence; it's about creating a dynamic environment where feedback loops spur continuous improvement. Take Toyota's legendary kaizen philosophy, emphasizing employee input at all levels to improve operations, as a guiding beacon for establishing a culture of improvement within risk management. Leadership here is less about command and control and more about invoking collaboration and recognizing the collective achievements that boost forward momentum. In such cases, leaders are able to transform risk management from a procedural task into a strategic asset, which raises their organizational influence and leads to an innovative, resilient workplace by focusing on the above elements

I think leadership is key in risk management settings as such settings are extremely volatile and it is difficult to lay down step by step procedure for such situation, especially in social context. Also, such situation one has to take decision with limited data. Such context calls for a leader who steer the process with acceptable level of risk and with empathy.

According to me, there are several ways to improve the risk management process which I usually follow during my Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) projects. Below are the two most important methods: 1. Regularly review and update the risk management plan to ensure it aligns with current industry standards and best practices. 2. Enhance the risk management process by fostering a culture of open communication and collaboration, encouraging employees at all levels to report potential risks, and suggesting improvements to mitigate them.

One important aspect in overall risk mitigation program that most of the risk managers miss is : to periodically reassess if the mitigation plan that is being implemented is taken into consideration present scenarios and is being re-assessed to be sufficiently resilient, especially if it’s technology dependent. Since some of the mitigation plans needs years to get implemented they need to be grooved into proper program management and reporting structure. This way leadership will have clear visibility on the residual risk that they still needs to deal with!

my approach to risk management extends to the critical step of reviewing and improving the process. In my leadership role, I actively engage in identifying and documenting the strengths and weaknesses of our risk management procedures, drawing insights from lessons learned and feedback obtained throughout the process. Cultivating a culture of continuous learning and improvement is paramount, and I place emphasis on soliciting and incorporating feedback and suggestions from team members and stakeholders. Recognizing and rewarding contributions fosters a collaborative and motivated team, contributing to trust-building and positive relationships.

In my opinion, leadership support is crucial in risk management projects for several reasons. Failure or success of a risk management project heavily depends on the commitment and involvement of leaders within the organization. 1. Firstly, leaders play a key role in setting the tone and culture of an organization. When leaders actively support risk management initiatives, it sends a clear message to employees that managing risks is a priority and should be taken seriously. This helps create a proactive and risk-aware environment. Secondly, leadership support provides the necessary resources and authority to effectively manage risks. Risk management projects often require dedicated time, budget, and expertise.

Irrespective of the context, you are a leader because people follow you. People follow people they trust. People follow people that will contribute to their success. People follow people they like. Simple be trusted, liked and convince people you will make them successful. How!? How about ask them? Ask them what they aspire to be, what they want, what they need. Care enough to figure out how to help them achieve that. Be a decent human. In the specific context of Risk Management - find common ground - what does everyone agree on? We are all here to identify/mitigate/remediate risk - why because we all care about the success of the company/corporate/nonprofit we are doing the work for. Then build on that.

When trying to be a leader in risk management it is critical that you fully embrace the opinions of each of the influencers involved in the final decision. We often become blind to the weakness in credits in which we are personally involved. On the flip we tend to be more critical of transactions where you do not have a personal relationship with the borrower. As a general rule I’ve found it is much better to clearly outline specific risks you have identified and then specific things that can be done to mitigate those risks / concerns. Most importantly if you identify a major flaw in a credit presentation it is much better to discuss that issue privately so it can be addressed as opposed to publicly where people become more defensive.

Some key points to consider for the development of leadership skills when collaborating in RM: 1. Think as if you were the Chair of the risk committee ie. consider the big picture by referring to the Risk Appetite Statement of the organization. RAS is the base of all risk management actions. 2. Risk mitigation strategies/measures should always be prioritized according to the risk appetite of the organization, as it is impossible to address all risks identified. 3. Adequate resources and budgets should be allocated for the implementation of risk mitigation measures. 4. Ongoing monitoring, review and reporting of key risk indicators and the effectiveness of risk control measures is critical for any successful risk management program.
