In today's era, cross functional skills are much in market demand. It's a multidisciplinary approach. AI technology assistant in all domains, is one reason behind the scenes why these cross functional skills are much in talk today. One can develop the cross functional skills by working with other or joining to work in partnership and sharing the technical knowledge.

I've actively joined various cross-functional projects, across national and global partnerships in industry, government, and academia. Practical engagement is key to developing collaboration skills. Real-world projects expose individuals to complexities, fostering communication and trust among stakeholders. Immersing oneself in authentic cross-functional collaboration is vital for honing these essential skills.

The right start: - understand your role and keep asking questions until you feel comfortable with it - read publications and stay up to date on the topic - plan your experiments in advance - Document thoroughly and scrutinize your data Research doesn't work in the lab only: - build relationships and a network to advance your project - don't focus too much on your own role, but also think outside the box. There is more than just one way - regularly exchange ideas within your team to get other perspectives - don't let yourselves be kept down and don't allow micromanagement. This fosters cross-functional collaboration, enabling the team to leverage diverse perspectives to tackle complex challenges. Understanding customer requirements and multi-area collaboration, coupled with continuous feedback from customers and suppliers, and of course, of your direct team, helps achieve goals faster and promotes the win-win. It is well known and I have proven it, that if you support your processes on your work networking, the quality increases and the process time decreases, therefore, be open to change, curious, open-‘minded and willing to learn.n

In my experience, companies firstly have to show their people the value of collaboration. Once they see what they’re working toward, you can start building formal and informal skills. Ensuring that there’s a collaborative work environment, making sure there’s cross functional forums, and incentives (in the form of shared goal setting), and measurement of effective collaboration (integrated cross functional KPI’s) will assist with cross functional collaboration

Ask questions about the functions that interface with yours so that you understand their contribution and perspective. And focus on making handoffs between functions as seamless (and pleasant!) as possible. Seek advice of the functions that interface with your function - early and often.

in my view collaboration and communication in any field is key to success, particularly it is quite relevant in the R&D activities. A cross functional team with varied skill and expertise etc is always successful in generating required solution to the problem effectively.

One way isn’t the only way and perhaps not even the best way. Different perspectives and ideas can lead to a breakthrough in the project thereby leading to quicker results or a better product. Being open to learning from others either through a difference in perspective or an entirely new skill can be a positive experience. We should always seek other thoughts and ideas outside our comfort zone which builds strong network of work relationships, breaking silos and checking egos at the door.

Additionally, consider joining industry-related groups or networking events to expand your mentorship opportunities. Remember, mentorship is a two-way street—show gratitude, be receptive, and apply what you learn to enhance your collaboration skills effectively.

In my experience Companies need cross-functional team collaboration to support innovative ideas and benefit from the diverse skill of employees. But more of cross-functional teams are dysfunctional with no accountability, unclear governance, and vague project goals. Successful cross-functional teams need effective collaboration strategies that align with their project goals so that employees can easily work with each other, even if they belong to different departments or domains. And for success of companies needed below things (in my prospective) -Have a proper leadership -Alignment of project goals -acknowledgment of time limitations -transparency in between CFT -Proper communication between CFT

People are generally like to collaborate, to learn and to contribute. A strong project leader and / or a good project manager who understands the inter-connections or interactions among different functional areas, or who can learn quickly, is important to facilitate the collaborations, then everyone can benefit from it. This can also help identify gaps if any.

Developing cross-functional collaboration skills involves fostering mutual respect, recognizing the team's collective importance, and prioritizing ethical boundaries (consent, privacy, and confidentiality). Addressing cross-cultural variations, effective communication, and cultivating inclusivity contribute to a dynamic team. All six elements are crucial to successful cross functional collaborations. An important factor is the duration of the needed activity, is it a time bound project or a longer term strategy? Are we working on a future market approach or an immediate result? Both scenarios require strong commitment to the desired outcome and a full understanding of the scoped work. Collaborations will only work once a good understanding is established between all team participants. Speaking for myself, a lot became clear after completing the “Situational Leadership” courses of a well known coaching provider.

It is important to understand the mediating role of governance in the relationship between collective capacity and project success of in its dimensions: - successful management and delivery of products, - successful results from the use of project products, - benefits generated, as per financial return, including learning feedding back into team absorptive capacity generating collective competencies and competitive advantages for the organization, - economic, environmental and social sustainability. Capital asset development projects, due to its multi-disciplinary demands, cross-funcional skills are crux, and so is a governance to steer and reward its development.
