I have been doing this for a long time and I work backwards. I calculate what I need to comfortably make in a year, before taxes - then start pulling out taxes, healthcare other estimated expenses. Once I have that number, then I figure out what I need monthly and hourly because each business you work with will pay differently (hourly, retainer, project etc).

If you don't work in the sector you're delivering in, then yeah, research is key.
