However, from past experience the most important step is internal alignment on your transport needs, before you start any discussions with Carriers. This means meeting with your finance team to set out a transport budget, meeting with your sales teams to align on any planned customer expansions, both new and existing, meeting with your logistics team to understand pain points from past carriers, or understanding if any customers have specific compliance requirements. Knowing the above will help in negotiating with carriers, and give you a list of standards that need to be met in order to move forward.

In my experience “My way has not always been the highway”, what works in the USA or China might not always work in other countries. We need to improve the best practices and localize them based on the local approaches. Do A/B testing, to always find ways to improve performance, replicate what works, and move on from previous failures as what works now might not always going to work tomorrow. There are different aspects to improve cost effectiveness, one is to improve efficiency by normal ways other is to improve efficiency by out of the box way. i.e. efficiency can be improved by using hub & spoke type of warehousing model, by combining load one can use full container load which will also improve cost effectiveness. Or another way is to consider combining load for certain time period to improve efficiency by full container load which will also improve cost but this approach needs evaluation of cost of inventory carrying due to additional coverage vs cost saved due to full container load.

With the increase costs of transportation from fuels etc, it maybe a good time to review you pallet, truck and container utilisation.
