In my experience there are multiple factors which need to be accounted for before selecting points for Formation Sampling. First and foremost analyzing the triple combo log and noting down the reservoir depths where the bore hole is gauged. Secondly zones of heavy washouts and depths where the driller has experienced tight pulls needs to be avoided. If wireline log is acquired, total tension curve needs to be seen. Thirdly selecting consisting depth points where formation pressure repeatedly can be obtained (keeping in mind 4 points at least because 3 will be required for a good gradient analysis) Fourthly hydrostatic pressure at a known sand needs to be checked for a QC.

It is critical to understand what is the ultimate objective you wish to achieve. Are you collecting fluid samples to help: 1. Build a plant? 2. Improve your Compositional modeling? 3. Improve your equation of estate? 4. Understand how the ratio of flow from different have changed? 5. Understand the history of fluid charging into your reservoir? 6. Understand if there is communication between zones? 7. Etc... Once you know what you want to achieve, it becomes an easy task to determine the optimum location/number of the fluid samples and when and at what conditions they should be acquired .

Screen out potential candidates for fluid sampling 2. Identify, by reviewing historical samples, sources or contamination, technology challenges and drilling practices that could potentially not allow you to collect a representative sample 3. Understand the optimum lateral/vertical location to achieve what your objective. 4. Identify the best tool and timing to collect the sample and at whay conditions.
