1 Know your users

Get as much information as possible, but know what you're looking for. Understand who they are, their past experiences, what they're used to, and most importantly, what is the main objective of the application. Sometimes we can get distracted by a lot of factors. But all tutorials or guidance should be reflective of the kind of users that should be using this application, and it should build up towards what the application should be working towards. And consider that your target audience, might not be as niche as you think, so consider options for them to adjust or customize if it is possible.

2 Use clear and consistent cues

The second step is to provide clear and consistent cues and feedback to guide your users through your VR app. You can use visual, audio, or haptic cues to indicate what the user can do, where they can go, and what they can expect. For example, you can use highlights, arrows, or icons to show the user what objects they can interact with, or use voice-overs, sounds, or vibrations to confirm their actions or provide instructions. You should also avoid using too many or too complex cues that might overwhelm or confuse the user.

Your choice of icons and colours, albeit sometimes redundant, does play a huge factor in the quickness of your users catching on to your UI design. If you design a mug with a handle, it is natural that the first part of the mug that people would interact with is the handle. Same with doors, weapons, or other interactable objects. Make it make sense. Don't try to be too aesthetically pleasing until you're not being consistent or even clear. Sometimes you can be simple and yet more effective than looking good, but not communicating the right message.

You can use familiarity in other meaningful ways. Using the UI architecture from other similar apps, games or tools would make navigating menus easier. Same thing can be said for mental models. Metaphors like throwing objects in a garbage bean in order to delete them are interactions that don't need to be thought and can be understood regardless of the level of experience of the user.

3 Balance challenge and support

The third step is to balance the challenge and support that you offer to your users during onboarding. You want to keep your users engaged and motivated, but not frustrated or bored. You can use adaptive and dynamic onboarding techniques to adjust the difficulty and pace of your VR app according to the user's skill level and performance. For example, you can use scaffolding, hints, or rewards to help the user overcome obstacles or learn new skills, or use branching, branching, or personalization to offer the user more choices or challenges.

Discovery shouldn't turn into a treasure hunt ??. Guiding the users with a serie of visual cues like subtle glows or contextual pop up to the environment and/or the controller can help you make sure the user discovers the very basics at the beginning... But remember to add a skip button for all the impatientsnout there.

5 Test and iterate
