How can you design a user interface that is accessible to users with low literacy levels?

In my experience User interface should be very simple and interractive, should have sequence of action aligned in such a way that even an illitrate should not miss a step. Use of pictures to describe the action helps a lot. while designing the interface think of the worst possible way it could go wrong and take preventive measures. UI should be attractive and interractive in such a way that the flow of action should always be in focus.

To tackle this issue you will need to simplify the language and employ vivid visuals to enhance comprehension. Along with this you can also integrate audio prompts and voice guidance for users who have reading problems and include interactive elements to increase engagement helping people to easily navigate through the interface.

Understanding users begins with the protocol and context with which you engage them. Be intentional in the ethnography you conduct, the prompts with which you communicate, and document everything - include recording, a proctor, and a recorder.

El uso de colores y contrastes adecuados, esto entre el texto y el fondo, para facilitar la lectura de las personas. La optimización del dise?o y la navegación es fundamental. Para lograr ello se requiere la utilización de un lenguaje sencillo y directo, incorporar íconos y elementos visuales claros, garantizar una muy buena legibilidad y visibilidad de los elementos.

Entendiendo un poco el dise?o de una interfaz de usuario que sea accesible para usuarios con bajos niveles de alfabetización, este punto en particular (ACCESIBILIDAD) es muy importante porque se debe ser muy intuitivo para las acciones que se desean que haga el usuario. El sonido es un elemento multimedia que debe estar presente ya sea para instrucciones, sensación de aciertos o de fracasos y de esta manera aporta al uso correcto de la interfaz. El texto como otro elemento multimedia debe estar presente pero en lo más básico y acompa?ado con paletas de colores que aporte al significado del contenido.

Traditionally, symbols are easily understood and accpted by all cultures and age groups when understanding language becomes a hurdle. A combination of commonly understood symbols and colors along with a well designed intuitive layout would be a good start followed by testing and improvement.

Testing tells you how well you understand your users - you may think that your interface is intuitive because you’ve spent time thinking about it and your users, but ultimately, it is your users who will make the judgment as to whether your interface is intuitive and easy to use. Remove as many obstacles as possible to testing, test with as many users as possible and make it easy for them to be a part of your testing, and test until you see users interacting efficiently with your interface to accomplish what they need to do. Unless it is part of your offering, testers should be there to observe users interacting with the interface. They should not be assisting users to navigate the interface.

Communicating with low-literacy users is similar to communicating with a multi-lingual readership - both problems call for a less- or non-verbal approach. Manufacturers who serve a global audience have had to grapple with this problem for decades - and technical literature (assembly instructions, user guides, etc.) from the likes of Ikea provide a good model for others to follow.

Nivel bajo de alfabetización, significa nivel bajo de lectura y escritura. Es importante entender cuál es el objetivo que tiene la aplicación respecto al problema que resuelve a los usuarios. Para ello, se debe investigar información o datos que permitan conocer el comportamiento y comunican los usuarios en torno al problema que resuelve la aplicación, por ejemplo: que símbolos, lenguaje verbal, sonidos, espacios y formas utilizan para resolver o vivir el problema; es entender como el público objetivo percibe las categorías de información que la aplicación va a usar en su navegación y funcionalidades sin depender del lenguaje escrito. En adelante, se sigue un proceso iterativo continuo de dise?o, pruebas, desarrollo, pruebas y despliegue.

Estudiar, comprender, experimentar, analizar y hacer propias buenas prácticas ya existentes. Da igual que no sean del propio ámbito donde estés trabajando, todo es extrapolable, todo se puede adaptar, amoldar y reciclar.
