I used experiential learning practices for many years while teaching wilderness first aid, search and rescue, and risk management. We used to run realistic simulations and participants loved it! I continue to use a similar approach in all the training I give, especially in risk management. The inspiration behind experiential learning can be summarized by Confucius who said: "Tell me and I'll forget" (this is the old lecture format); "Show me and I may remember" (PowerPoint and additional readings); "Involve me and I'll understand" (experiential learning).

In my experience, real life case study approach works- take real examples, involve participants to develop scenarios, discuss pros & cons & then reveal the actual decision or scenario. This helps participants to compare their assumptions with the actual results.

Every topic should be led by examples, scenario analysis, group discussion over a particular case. Trainer should make understand the learners that there is no right or wrong and black or white in risk management. Rather most of the decisions are taken on grey areas.
