So here's a few aspects that helped me: 1. Choose the right software, large print media- InDesign, small print files/digital media- Illustrator. 2. Prioritise readability, talk to your clients and convince them to keep the content precise and engaging and use your experience to make it more readable. 3. Figure out the correct fonts, anything more than 3 fonts reduces readability drastically and is a more confused design in general. 4. Strike a balance between aesthetics and user/reader friendliness in layouting and positioning elements in your design by maintaining good symmetry or harmony depending on the design. 5. Get the colours and contrasts right, avoid using colour combinations which make text or elements hard to recognise.

Making design decisions from the beginning with your goals in mind can make the process easier. I start with classic thumbnails on paper to work out my design ideas, and think about different formats. Next step is choosing software and fine-tuning my layouts for print, and/or various screen sizes.

How fast? How efficient? These are two questions you would consider when choosing a design software. Notably, there are many design software now, on the market. For instance, you would effectively work on a vector-based design on Linearity as well as you would on Adobe Illustrator. Gimp, on the other hand, would give you similar options as Adobe Photoshop. Moreover, there is a prominent hype on online software, with fewer clicks such as Canva. The secret to flexibility in design for both print and digital media is learning the interoperability of different software. As amazing as the design could be, what makes the difference is the highest quality output. The end justifies the means.

Consistent branding does so much to stamp the identity of the business to the target consumers. It is important for a business to come up with brand guidelines at its budding stage. At the basic level, identifying the logo variations and their uses, font types, color schemes, patterns, and brand applications on digital and print media. It is equally important for the designer to stick to the brand guidelines until a revamp is needed. This will not only step up the business but also the designer's portfolio. Creativity is measured when you have fewer options.

Design and Brand consistency are the fundamentals of a solid business. Don’t give people whiplash with every design. If you have to change, do small changes across years, not days or even months. People need time to adjust.

A brand's style guide should remain relatively consistent throughout the years, but it is encouraged to re-evaluate the relevancy of certain features and motifs to ensure the overall look and feel is not outdated. For instance, before the 2010s, a brand may have not considered a 1x1 version of their logo or image that fits into a circular or square frame. However, in this social media age, an icon or representative image is crucial for ease of identification and representation of the logo in an app or profile picture.

Having a Design Library or a Design System can be very helpful to keep consistency. You can keep all the branding elements and presets prepared to be used on both media. This way you won't have to wonder what font size to use or how rounded the corners should be – set it up once and keep it for later. Remember! To set it up you first need to test it on both media. We keep our Design System on Figma and have some tested presets for printing materials.

CMYK has a smaller color gamut than RGB. This means that there are far fewer achievable colors when you print. When working on a project that has to be output in both print and digital, take this into account. Choose a color palette that will translate into both color modes.

Color formats and output formats are important in presenting works so that you can reach your desired result. If there is a mistake in the formats, the final file can be problematic.

Design for different medium requires how good a designer is with whatever software she or he chooses, frankly speaking, non is better than the other totally, manipulation is key. Dealing with text is better with vector manipulation just because is can be cascaded into any size and it will maintain its sharp resolution for a cleaner output (printing) while on a realistic mode, image manipulation software is best but not for text usage design even with smart objects, the bigger it is the txt the likelihood of bigger pixels

You can use templates, but only to speed up the process. Do not only rely on it. Know the rules and skills for design. Build your foundation and rulebook, then break the rules.

Not every single item has to be custom made on every step of the process; there are a lot of open libraries online with assets that are especially great for brainstorming phases, sketches, and drafts. Keeping templates clean and organized will also help you maintain projects consistent and with the same voice and tone. Also, one of the most important steps to get the most out of this library is proper labeling. Name every shape, layer, text, document, folder, file, anything you use. By doing this, you make sure to always find what you need, when you need, or share with your peers, coworkers, or clients.

No one can design in a vacuum. Human beings are social creatures, we crave feedback. So give, and receive it humbly. Revision isn’t a bad thing. It’s the sandpaper and varnish on top of a carving.

For Digital Design: Use 72 dpi and RGB colors. For Print Design: Use 300 dpi and CMYK colors. DPI stands for Dots per inch and PPI stands for Pixels per inch.

I was once told that you cannot create in a vacuum. You have to see what is going on around you and consider your perspective. Let that feed your work. Print, especially at large scale and/or physical branding across multiple formats requires a close eye on color. If your client has a recognized brand, in which color plays a part, then missing a check on colors can negatively impact end product. Research established or use colors that can preferably work both digitally and in print so you have consistent branding for client. A good example is the Home Depot Orange hex (#FA6304), CMYK: 0, 0.604, 0.984, 0.019, and PANTONE: PMS 165 C. Making sure this color doesn't deviate ensure consistent branding across all channels.

There are huge misconceptions when what DPI to use. Everyone tells you 300dpi. To understand what your final use of your advert or document is going to be used for. I would recommend working at 300dpi. Then if it is for screen then downscale to 72dpi. If it is for newspaper or news print the 133dpi. If you doing work for glossy Magazine then 150dpi. If your work is for art book. Then 175dpi. That's the best for litho. Then if you are working in digital then 150dpi to size is perfect. One cannot see a difference between 150 and 300 when printing on canvas or cotton Rag. If its just for posters for advertising then 150dpi with artwork to size is sufficient. Alway remember you cannot upscale or enlarge without loosing quality.

When designing something like a billboard artwork, the logical thing to do is work with the actual sizes but Adobe illustrator has a limit size. Which can be confusing. Adobe Photoshop has no limit. However, the file will be so big you won’t be able to work smoothly (lags). What you want to do is focus on the ratios instead. If your billboard is a 6m x 6m. Try to lower that as much as possible but maintain a dpi of about 100 to maintain the quality of the print. This strikes a balance between efficiency, size of the print ready file & the quality the print itself.
