How can you design an effective induction program for novice teachers?

SMART goals with clear assessments to measure the impact of the induction program are imperative to the success of such an intervention. Clear planning should include budgeting for resources, identifying quality human resource for training, and ensuring that the program is aligned with the vision and mission of the institution. The program should ensure all the participants are familiar with the vision and mission and are equipped with strategies required to successfully contribute to the growth of the institution.

Mentoring has been identified as an important influence in professional development in both the public and private sector.? Benefits of mentoring include increased employee performance, retention, commitment to the organization, and knowledge sharing.? A personal development relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps to guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person. Having a strong mentoring team in place is helpful along with observation tools, observation timelines, specific feedback, action plan, second observation, feedback and building on strength as well as strengthening the areas of improvement.

One thing worked for me was a clear implementation plan. We identified areas that all faculty members needed to be on the same page on across disciplines and held a week long orientation for all new faculty members. The session included teaching styles and objectives, leadership and management, , team building and cultural change, & assessment and feedback. A team of master trainers trained earlier led the sessions for the new faculty members. A reflection and evidence of learning form was completed by the participants at the end of each session. The sessions were repeated over 3 weeks to train all new team members. A debrief & brainstorm session was held each day to identify areas for improvement and the feedback incorporated.

Ongoing observation and feedback sessions, surveys, end of term meetings with each team member, and a SWOC (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Challenges) at the end of term are some ways we used to assess our teacher training programs.

Best practices and innovative techniques that emerged were appreciated, credited, and celebrated. It not only help build the confidence of novice teachers but also motivated the entire team to try new ideas.

Aligning goals and communicating the same to novice teachers for implementation and documentation is definitely the foundation of the induction program. The SOPs should be tested and tried with regular additions and deletions .This will keep the organisation in sync with the latest education policy and the system will work well. Since perspective matters, so it is equally important to let the novice teachers voice their doubts, concerns, seek clarity and give suggestions about the policies designed. All stake holders must be heard though not necessarily include their point of view in the SOPs, if not essential. Assessment of the induction program and celebration of any achievement builds positive atmosphere.
