I supported the perspectives of “understanding” in Peter Salovey and John Mayer’s EI approach. “Understanding” plays a vital role and helps foster a supportive community for our students. This strategy includes celebrating their birthdays, having high expectations, encouraging them when they struggled, awarding them for their achievements, giving them a word when they feel sad, calling home for a positive feedback, acknowledging each student is unique, listening to them, apologizing when we are wrong, etc. These are the few things that I practice throughout my career. Integrating EI into the curriculum is great but you must endure that staff are trained and confident in addressing the topic and any issues that arise. EI like many similar topics get placed in PSHE or Social studies, and taught by staff who have extra capacity on their timetables. They many not have the knowledge to back it up so professional development is key in supporting these subjects.
