Certainly! Understanding users is vital, and employing various methods such as surveys, interviews, observations, personas, and user journeys can provide valuable feedback and insights. This understanding allows for empathizing with user perspectives, prioritizing their needs, and crafting solutions that effectively address their problems and expectations. In a broader context, it's crucial to link elements like user understanding, learning outcomes, technology selection, design for engagement, motivation, and value proposition communication to the overall strategic plan of the organization.

Understanding your users is important, it's is equally important to have a representation of all major stakeholders "in the room" throughout the design cycle.

Target the added value. The point behind education technology is not to reproduce digitally existing material. Always ask what added value can this digital material or technology bring rather than just reproduce the same thing but under a digital format. For example: would it make learning more motivating? Would it facilitate teaching or learning? Would it foster learner’s autonomy? Would it reduce drop outs? Would it enhance professional development? Would it facilitate administrative tasks and follow up? These are just a few questions depending on the actual needs and existing problematics. Educational technology must respond to existing gaps and problems and be user friendly to see the significant rationale and plus behind its use.

Understanding Users, Define your learning outcomes, Choose your technology, Design for engagement and motivation and Communicate your value proposition are intrinsically linked. The missing piece here is linking all of these elements to the overall strategic plan of the organization. We first need understand what role learning and development needs to play. One of the common missteps organizations make when employing technology here, is that the technology becomes the tail that wags the dog. We should ensure that any tech is a useful tool for disseminating knowledge, managing content, communicating, reporting etc and does not become the only way we deliver organizational learning.

While the steps mentioned are necessary, I believe they're insufficient. Good edtech is "ed" before it's "tech." Step 1 has to be assembling a team where an educator (or an education team depending on the size of the organization) is in the driving seat. Education is a science as much as - if not more than - an art, so those who understand how the brain develops and humans learn need to be at the center of the design process. Followed by that, designing the pedagogy needs to be step 2 (basically how teaching and learning will happen) and then you kick off the process above.

Clearly articulate the learning outcomes you aim for users to achieve. Ensure these are aligned with educational standards and are SMART—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This clarity guides the design process, focusing it on delivering tangible educational value. For example, for a math tutoring app, learning outcomes might include mastering specific algebraic concepts within a semester, measured through periodic assessments.

My experience with students from K-12 has shown me that the technology used in the classroom has to be adaptable to the different devises used in a classroom and house settings. Some apps can be very resourceful and attractive in format, but become slow and loose students attention if it takes too long to connect from one activity to another.

Select technology that supports your pedagogical goals, is accessible to your target audience, and can scale as your user base grows. Consider not just the current technological trends but also the infrastructure available to your users. For instance, opting for a lightweight web app over a heavy, feature-rich application can make your EdTech more accessible to users with limited internet bandwidth.

To obtain commitment from stakeholders, the student learning outcomes (SLOs) must be visible at all times so that stakeholders can decode the vocabulary, realize expected achievement, and unearth the multi-layered components that constitute mastery. SLOs impact the other steps, especially iteration. They minimize or void iteration. Each stakeholder should dissect outcomes for clarity, attainability, and relevance of SMART. Empowering stakeholders to select from a plethora of technology programs to create a myriad of products impacts mastery in profound ways, and freedom of choice incorporates equity fluidly.

Parlay Ideas does a wonderful job of showing stakeholders (students and educators) data trends and progress towards goals in easy to interpret ways. This helps students feel more motivated to be active in the learning process.

Canva serves as a master class for this. Using canva is easy, even to the point that students in first grade can fairly easily and consistently learn how to use the app. Well, their results are going to be all over the place and there are conception of what they can do with the app is probably going to start off very limited, the fact that it's so easy to use that children of that age can start using. It really shows you how well designed and intuitive canva really is. As someone who has used Canva for years myself, I have realized that I am still learning about how to maximize what I can create with Canva. And the fact is I keep getting better at design because of how Canva works. This is the type of engagement everyone should shoot for.

Embedding wraparound support resources to foster self-efficacy and growth mindsets also promotes persistence. Finally, seamless UX thoughtful of cognitive load and friction points respects both learners’ and educators’ time.

EdTech tools need a value proposition for teachers (users) and buyers (principals and supers). Most products are overly focused on the teachers and forget to include capabilities that benefit the buyers. Since the buyers aren't in the class, engage them to understand their pain points. In some cases, it might not be related to what happens in the classroom and this is not your target persona. Companies that address the buyer will create a dashboard to show the impact the tool is having. For both teachers and principals/supers, make sure you remind them of the value you provide. This can be done with in-app engagement or periodic emails.

Realistically, if your goal is 'designing EdTech that meets all stakeholders' needs', that is basically impossible; you can't keep everyone happy all the time. So, focus on the most important stakeholders and be prepared to explain 'why' to all the others. As an example: our company allows teachers to delegate the bulk of grading work so they can dedicate themselves to stuff where they add much more value. AI is a technology that may or may not be able to do that for teachers in the future, but not today. That means I've had to explain a million times why we're not using AI to grade students' documents and instead delegate grading to external qualified professionals instead. But I don't mind, as my focus is on helping teachers today.

Iterate and improve is the Key activity to keep your edtech working and growing. keep asking for feedback from all the stakeholders and what I love to use in as feedback method (Start,Stop, Continue) ask them what you should add to make their work or their experience better, what you should stop doing, and finally what you should keep going because they love it. don't over innovate, use the tech where its really needed not using tech for just being edtech.

The most important stakeholder are the students. Design EdTech learning design experience around what sort of experience you want students to take away from the learning environment that will effectively support their learning. Plan the pedagogy design around that experience you want to create that will be supportive to the learners, and then choose the technology that will be able to support the learning.

There are many ways for iteration to play a major role in edtech. I think that the typical way people think about iteration is that the product itself will go through multiple versions. Now, this could mean that multiple iterations are happening successively, or that some form of A/B testing is going on. But while this is useful, I think there's another element that is being overlooked by some ed tech providers. When you are creating a product, iteration doesn't just happen in the product itself. It should be happening everywhere in your design cycle, starting from the very beginning. You should be iterating on clarifying and sharing your vision and mission, empathizing with your customers, and even deployment strategies.

Many edtech products focus on the traditional school system and market; however, there are also non-traditional learning structures (worldschooling, homeschooling, flexischooling, etc.), which are often family- and child-led. They are increasing in number and bear consideration when designing inclusively.

ED tech is usually not a “one and done” PD experience. Stake holders need the opportunity to go and use the technology, return to an “expert” and ask more questions. Learning new skills with technology is recursive for most stakeholders. Use, learn, ask questions, try something new, repeat.

When adding AI to the mix for EdTech tools, we need to be cognizant of inherent AI bias. I've used tools that are jumping on the AI bandwagon without proper vetting and planning and noticed biases, particularly with generative AI, that prompted deep discussions with my students.
