1 Cooling system types

There are two main types of cooling systems used in the automotive industry: liquid-cooled and air-cooled. Liquid-cooled systems use a fluid, usually water or antifreeze, to circulate heat from the engine to a radiator, where it is dissipated to the ambient air. Air-cooled systems use fins or fans to transfer heat directly from the engine to the air. Liquid-cooled systems are more common, as they offer better temperature control, lower noise, and higher durability. However, air-cooled systems are simpler, lighter, and cheaper, and may be preferable for some applications.

Air-cooled systems are tend to be used in passenger car application, therefore liquid-cooled systems are for commercial vehicle applications because of the heat dissemination are much wider than passenger cars. In commercial vehicles, one should use liquid-cooled systems in all electronics such as motor, DC-DC converter, inverter, batteries, etc since air cooling will not be enough to cool the systems down. If cooling down is not enough, it will make the system unstable and lose their effeciencies wihch also make them to consume more. Consuming more in fuel or electricity means more emission, more pollution to the environment.

Air cooled engines tend to have less cooling capacity than water cooled engines. This lack of capacity limits not only the ambient capability of the engine, but its ability to handle the heat demands of modern emissions controls. Ignition timing limitations, lean air/fuel mixtures, and cooled EGR requirements to meet the EPA emissions regulations add such a burden to an engine's cooling system that air cooled engine's are heading toward obsolescence.

2 Cooling system components

A typical liquid-cooled system consists of several components, such as a water pump, a thermostat, a radiator, a fan, a pressure cap, and hoses. The water pump drives the fluid through the system, while the thermostat regulates the fluid flow based on the engine temperature. The only way to accurately test a cooling system is in a real world environment. Laboratory testing and simulation give a good idea up front of how the system may perform, but until it's actually in the application and operating under its real world conditions, the true performance of the system cannot accurately be measured.

6 Cooling system challenges

Despite the advances in cooling system design and technology, there are still some challenges that the automotive industry faces, such as increasing heat loads, stricter emission standards, and higher customer expectations. Increasing heat loads are caused by the trend of downsizing and turbocharging engines, which generate more heat per unit volume and require more cooling. Compounding these issues, noise requirements are becoming stricter as well, which the larger airflow requirements of increased cooling capacity influences too. Additionally, the increase in load from the fans and pumps in these systems is decreasing the efficiency of the engines affecting performance and fuel economy.
