How can you design a blog layout that engages readers?

The most frequent mistake for a blog design is not designing around the content. You may love a blog layout, but if you only have 3 blog posts so far, it has a bit of growing to do before you can showcase all the blog topics/categories. Also showing latest posts under each post will keep users on your site for longer as they go down the blog rabbit hole.

It is important to make sure your audience is invested in your story. It is important to invoke an emotion and ask them to be involved. If I feel like I have an emotional involvement it keeps my intention.

Something has to grab the attention of the audience right away. A bold statement or a font that jumps off the page and grabs you, keeping you close, til you get to the end, wanting more. Too much text can sometimes be hard. Text and layout are key.

If it's a blog, engage the audience from the first sight and make them read and progress further. ? Choose the fonts carefully ? Make the headline eye catching with easy to read and relate topic ? Rich graphics a definite no at the beginning but later in the form of infographics

I firmly believe that you always need to give your audience a reason to return. Stay consistent by giving valuable content that your visitors are genuinely looking for. Make your posts easy to digest, with takeaways then can use going forward. Doing so will eventually make your blog a go-to place.

Form follows function. But, whatever the form is, color is key. Often I will start with seasonal colors. I find seasonal colors are soothing to look at; we expect and look forwards to seasons. We all have memories associated with seasonal colors. For blogs, it's a great way to set a great recurring color palette with subtle changes. That way your blog can change with the season.

Considering that many people access blogs on their mobiles, it's crucial to think about how your content and layout will appear on smaller screens while maintaining readability. By prioritising readability with larger text and spacing on smaller screens you will ensure smooth reading!

Blog articles are the new double-page spread, in the digital world. Keep things simple typographically and add strong flourishes sparingly. The most successful blogs always have highly readable typography, with good line-height spacing, text-alignment and font-sizes. Flourishes can be used in between paragraphs of body text, at the beginning, end or to the sides, but should not interrupt or impede communication and should be applied with an editorial mindset, befitting to the article that is being read. Entirely black and white layouts can be harsh on the eyes, so keep contrast high but avoid the extremes where possible. Do not be afraid to mute the brightness of a white background, or thicken a white font on a dark background.

Good layout is that engage readers involves a combination of visual appeal, readability and usability. For that design should me clean and visually appealing and it has pleasing color scheme and typography for easy readability. Ensure blog layout is responsive and works wells on different devices.

We are all overstimulated by too many images moving way to fast: too many signs on the freeway: too many adds on our phones and tablets.The question is, do they grab us and do they tell us anything. For video 2 to 4 seconds is almost the most we can compute or have the attention for. When I was first designing websites the question was, how long will people stay on a page. Storytelling is key to. What do you want your audience to come away with, or feeling what exactly.

"Enhance" is the key word. I'm a firm believer of "if it doesn't add, it takes away." Sometimes, that means treating pull quotes as a graphic element. Others, it means visually representing statistics mentioned within the copy or showcasing an example. The copy should enhance the visual and the visual should enhance the copy, and it should do so quickly so someone who's skimming can still get the gist of it. But if the visual doesn't connect or add to the blog? You're better off leaving it on the cutting room floor.

Depending on your audience, the navigation design could be completely new and wild or it could really hone in on convention. If your audience are tech-savvy and familiar with the web you may have some room to utilise some crazy, fun animation or design, however if you're aiming for accessible, all ages or specifically an older demographic I would suggest sticking to usual navigation convention (E.G. a hamburger menu, a drop-down) so that every viewer knows instantly where to click and how to use your site. I would recommend planning out your structure fully before even starting to build the navigation on your site, look at similar sites for inspiration, write down your pages and subpages and arrange them before putting it into design!

Don't forget to use the heading tags (h1-h6) in your blog's HTML and CSS wisely and in an organised fashion. This will help boost SEO and better serves any potential changes to the design theme long-term. It can be exploited for better navigation by aiding categorization of content across the blog.
