As per my experience, analysis of goals and scope of work is very critical to devise an API integration strategy for a business. Our team had an opportunity to develop a middleware which had to expose unified APIs for consumers while consuming APIs from diversified sources. During this implementation, it was crucial to brainstorm and document the analysis and vision. Goal and scope assessment included the establishment of clarity in objectives, alignment of all stakeholders in decision making, problem vs. solution mapping, enlisting business requirements and producing testing strategy. We found that the detailing within this initial analysis phase was found to be very helpful during the project execution.

2 Choose the right integration patterns and tools

Depending on your goals and requirements, you may need to adopt different integration patterns and tools to facilitate your API integration strategy. Some of the common integration patterns are point-to-point, hub-and-spoke, bus, and microservices. We needed to integrate a new media processing service with our existing platform. Initially, we opted for a simple point-to-point approach. This seemed efficient for a single integration, but as we added more services, it became cumbersome to manage and maintain. We quickly learned the importance of scalability and flexibility, leading us to adopt a microservices architecture. This proved to be much more effective, allowing us to independently deploy and manage each service, with improved performance and easier scaling.
