2 Apply universal design principles

Universal design is a framework that strives to make products and environments usable by all people, regardless of their age, ability, or situation. This framework is based on seven principles that guide the design of accessible community spaces. These principles include equitable use, flexibility in use, simplicity and intuitiveness, perceptible information, tolerance for error, low physical effort, and size and space for approach and use. 3 Consider the environmental and social impact

When designing accessible community spaces, it is important to consider the environmental and social impact of your design choices. Aim to create spaces that are environmentally friendly, resource-efficient, and resilient to climate change by using renewable or recycled materials, incorporating energy-saving or water-saving features, adding greenery or natural elements, enhancing natural ventilation or lighting, and reducing waste or pollution. Additionally, strive to create spaces that are socially responsible, culturally sensitive, and inclusive by respecting the local context and history, celebrating the diversity and identity of the community, encouraging participation and collaboration, providing opportunities for learning and empowerment, and supporting the well-being and safety of the users.

Intentional design needs input from ALL end users - especially community leaders and citizens who will hopefully adapt it as their own "home". Excessive climate and carbon intake are among a litany of concerns plauging the global landscape. For example, addressing all these issues in urban design (i.e. outdoor compost/recycling stations, walkabale trails, solar powered community centers, all-gender restrooms in civic areas, plaques to commemorate history of the area's historically native groups) can organically educate people as they enjoy a beautiful space! Incorporating sustainable materials and implementing Green based practices (i.e LEED and WELL AP) are also crucial to maintain the community spaces' accountability.

4 Evaluate and iterate your design

The final step in designing accessible community spaces is to evaluate and iterate your design. You should test your design with real users and measure its performance and impact. You can use methods such as usability testing, feedback sessions, surveys, or analytics to collect data and insights. Design with the users, not for them. Involve them during the modeling stage, so they can see the scale of the design in relation to its end use and how they will maneuver in the environment. Then, create a simple 1-to-1 replica of the design that reflects the final version, where they can experience it firsthand and relate any issues before the final construction of the design.
