How can you demonstrate your readiness for a promotion?

When getting feedback, I strongly urge you to consider the following: What are the opportunity gaps for you to get to the promoted role? What are the skills gap? Who do you need support from? What’s in your control? These questions are good to answer before you proceed with a game plan for promotion

Perception = Performance. What people are saying about you when you aren’t in the room will have a tremendous impact on how people perceive your actions & behaviour. You could be over delivering all you KPI’s but if your reputation is in the toilet it won’t mean anything. Map out your network and ask three genuine & influential people: When did you see me at my best? What can I improve? Where do you see me next? Armed with this you can start to adapt your behaviour and ensure that how you see you self is reflected in how people see you.

I've noticed a common fallacy many professionals hold, "if I work hard enough, someone will notice and give me a promotion". Or the other version of that, "my hard work speaks for itself" Sadly, everyone is too busy minding their own career to mind yours. That includes your boss and anyone responsible for talent development. Where does that leave you? Solely in the drivers seat of your career. The rest only come in to support what you are already doing. The most important step to getting a promotion is signalling you are ready for it by saying so. Seems obvious, right? It is not. I have met far too many professionals who are against actually saying those words - I want a promotion. Remember, if you never ask, the answer is always NO.

Why are we so slow to realise that hard work does not speak for its self? 1. Societal norms extolling modest being a virtue - don’t brag! 2. The way we are educated - pass the test, get the reward. Unfortunately the real work doesn’t work like that There are many elements and play, most outside of your control. What is in your control is your ambition and who knows about it. Define your ambition and then start articulating to people who can help you. Do this and you are well on your way to changing the trajectory of your career!

In short take a non-traditional technique to demonstrate your preparedness when pursuing a promotion. Set new standards with unconventional projects that embrace duties motivated by passion and transform procedures in unexpected ways. Show off your unique problem-solving ability by creating elegant answers to complex problems. Create a path that deviates from the norm by combining specialized knowledge with ongoing learning.

Keeping alignment with you manager is the first step towards a successful promotion pursuit however your manager should be where your start not where you finish. Making yourself a stand out choice for promotion requires the support of your managers peers too. Your manager’s peers may be direct or indirect stakeholders either way getting their support for your work quality, leadership skills and business results can make a huge impact to your pursuit of promotion when the discussion happens and you are not in the room. Think of promotion discussions as a team sport. Sending in just your manager to get the job done versus a multifunctional expert team to get the job done. With the team, the odds are in your favor.

Carve out space and time with your manager to speak to these achievements and be direct about the next step you desire. The more clear you are about what you want, the more your manager can support your goals.
