Researching the company is important, however, I think researching and understanding the industries landscape is more important. You should know the major players, trends, latest innovations, and at least a few projections on where the industry is headed. Every company will fit into those categories and will be interested in your take. Being able to convey these points concisely and accurately can take you a long way in winning the ever-elusive Sales Engineering role.

Technical skills are important. What is more important is understanding the technology from a theoretical standpoint. You will find yourself talking about technology way more than doing technology as a Sales Engineer. It is always a good idea to have a small lab in your home office to potentially demonstrate tech skills. This will show your commitment to the tech and will also let hiring managers know you are serious and take the technology seriously.

In my experience, I have seen people failing to showcase their soft skills at higher positions as well. Being from the HR industry, my perspective is, your profile & cover letter are the mirrors of your skills, knowledge and personality as well. If this fails to create a good impression then your further steps might seem to be a little shaky. To avoid this, try first reading your own submissions and rectify the grammar, spellings etc. Then you might want to turn to all the points mentioned here to emphasize on your soft skills!

Soft skills are SUPER important in Sales Engineering. The only thing you have to offer is a little tech knowledge and a smile in some cases. Being able to identify with hiring managers and win them over can be the difference in getting the job and not. Conversely, those same skills can win over customers and make you a trusted advisor. This will make a successful Sales Engineer.

Enthusiasm and curiosity is very important and should come naturally to you as a Sales Engineer. The third leg of that stool is creativity. One of the things I always want to know is what can a technology do that it wasn't designed to do. It's kind of like off-label uses for prescriptions. Sometimes those off-label uses will seal the deal for a customer and sometimes they will pioneer an industry. It's a good idea to know what they are.
