From my perspective, demonstrating your expertise with only a certificate is not enough. Sometimes those certificates are given by only completing the course. I'm not saying they're not worth it. I'm saying, we need more. We can demonstrate our expertise by creating projects on GitHub, writing articles about something interesting, uploading videos on YouTube talking about the technology, and building something useful for your current company. Let's get our hands dirty.

While contributing to OSS is a great choice, I would also add, before #4 that you may also write technical articles or do videos. I would like to add that being able to explain one's choice and defend them is nice, being able to explain multiple solutions and then, explicit the reasons why you chose one over another is even better. Sometimes, explaining a choice can just be a matter of ego whereas being able to benchmark several solutions shows the considerations you have put into selecting the one you deem fit better to the problem.

Clear and readable code for me is a subjective metric. What I wrote today may remain clear , concise and easy to navigate in years to come because of how I prefer to layer my code. But irrespective of the subjective intuitions behind the code is layered , a consistent layering approach will go a long way. For any new project or old one where new pieces needs to be added one can just stick to some idea of how the code should be abstracted or not and stick to it. This consistency makes navigation for fellow engineers and contribution far easier since you basically have created a Conventions. And conventions are better than having a mess of design patterns glued together. As for clarity of code , one can always come back to refactor :)

You should always have another language or 2 in your bag of skills. There are a few reasons - Few people just work on one thing in one language. You always end up building tools and scaffolding around your project which might be better done in another language. - Understanding C/C++ memory models will help you understand native code boundaries such as JNI or CLIF. - Interview questions about algorithms are often easier to answer in Python than C++, even if you would implement in C++ for performance.
