It can take a while for their website to update but press releases and other news coverage tells you exactly what they doing now, and identifies their most current, key priorities. They may be trying new ideas or working on new collaborations or making new waves in a new sector. Writing your request to include alignment with those highlighted areas can push your request to the top of a long list. Tell the funder you know what’s really important to them currently and how your solution needs to be included.

No funder wants to be the only funder for your work. Think of your project as a pie and explain to the funder how they are not the only piece of the pie necessary for success. Don’t ask a funder to be the only source of funding unless the amount of the request is very small, like under $5,000. Otherwise, seek out effective collaborations so you can show and tell the funder all of the partnerships involved in creating the solution, from monetary donations to in-kind donations to shared work. Collaborations create greater impact which stretches funder dollars in a positive way.
