How can you demonstrate effective leadership skills to your boss?

Even seasoned IT Leaders can slip up while showcasing leadership skills. Avoid these common pitfalls: 1. Overpromising: Be ambitious yet honest about achievable goals. 2. Lack of Communication: Regular dialogue with your team and boss prevents confusion. 3. Shunning Accountability: Own your mistakes and show you're open to learning.

When faced with “constructive criticism,” strive to look for the constructive and ignore the criticism. Those open to feedback virtually always benefit from it even though people giving their opinion oftentimes don’t consider how hard it is for you to receive their comments objectively without hearing something positive as well. Taking the other person’s comments or position personally, no matter how it comes across or how personal they attempt to make it, is of no benefit to you or your team. Recognize the feedback no matter how positive or negative as a gift, exercise active listening to discern the "gems" you can use, and take action where it makes sense afterward.

Clarity on what problems to solve is a critical prerequisite of solving problems. Put energy into and work to solve what is addressable from where you are. Everything else goes into one of two piles: I can effectively shape thinking on the problem, or I cannot. Put some energy into the former, and absolutely none into the latter until you can turn it into the former.

DO'S: 1. Stay Proactive: Identify and analyze issues before they escalate. Timeliness is everything. 2. Embrace Creativity: Innovative solutions often are the most effective. 3. Communicate Clearly: Decisions are only as good as your ability to explain them. DON'TS: 1. Don’t Procrastinate: Problems only worsen with time. Address them head-on. 2. Don’t Neglect Collaboration: Your team's views can offer valuable insights for decision making. 3. Don’t Shy Away from Tough Choices: Leadership often involves making difficult decisions. Embrace it as a part of the process.

It is easy to get locked into historic solutions, the way you’ve always done things, especially when the old ways worked and appear to remain successful. The challenge is that while historic solutions may still work, they are oftentimes no longer the best approach. This is where the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle can really add value. It allows you to continuously evolve by identifying suboptimal situations, testing potential solutions, course-correcting, and implementing the best possible remedies in a timely manner. If you follow those four simple steps you set yourself up to creatively identify the highest quality, highest value solution possible for any given problem.

You should be able to provide your team with the clarity of vision and permission so that you are not involved in their work decisions or continuous improvement ideas. Listen to then and focus your efforts on the issues and risks only you can fix.

It is very important to be clear and transparent in communication. Any decision needs to be discussed to get everyone's perspective and communicated up and down effectively before implementation. Data speaks and if you are able to back your decisions with it then it becomes much easier to justify them.

Whereas the other points in this article help, this one, "Inspiring and motivating others", is the most key. It separates Leaders from Managers. Just because someone is in a Leadership position (or seeks one) does not make them a Leader. Just some of the traits a leader needs to exhibit are (in no special order): Self-awareness, Authenticity, Humility, Emotional Intelligence, Trust, Resilience, Vulnerability. If you have a good combination of these, you have a good chance of being a Leader, a good Leader. If you don't, you will need to work on them...though they are not easy to be taught.

Being a leader is about inspiring and motivating others to reach their goals. It involves showing enthusiasm, passion, and a positive attitude toward your work and team. Effective communication of your vision and values is crucial. Recognizing and appreciating your team's efforts, along with offering support and guidance, is essential. By inspiring and motivating others, you show your boss that you have influential, supportive, and empowering qualities. Always try to lead by example and help whereover you can.

Spend time with your customers and your team. Understand your organisation and how it works...don't delegate transformational change...that's your only job.

To show your boss that you have good leadership skills, make sure to communicate clearly, solve problems proactively, and work well with your team. Take the lead by volunteering for difficult tasks, show that you can adapt to different situations, and set a good example for others. Be understanding and listen to your team members' worries. Have a positive attitude, inspire others, and create a collaborative work environment. Focus on getting results, take responsibility for your choices, and ask for feedback to keep improving. Keep your boss updated on your accomplishments and progress to show that you are committed to the goals of the organization.

You cannot be a good leader without ethical and moral clarity. Doing the right things in the wrong way will almost always backfire spectacularly. The good news is that most people have a pretty good moral compass. Consequently, once you understand a situation knowing the right thing is easy. While doing the right thing can be hard, it tends to get easier when you consider how your actions might look from an outsider’s perspective. If you wouldn’t mind seeing your story on the front page of The Wall Street Journal or some other prestigious national periodical, you’re probably on the right track.

Show personal leadership by owning your own career. Consider, plan, and propose steps you will take to make yourself more ready for the next challenge or role. Listen to feedback, adjust, and re-propose.
